Vorlon Planet Killer mini

Mongoose
I've been modelling for several years now and am considering a difficult project. I want to create a Vorlon Planet Killer, but can't decide how big it should really be. A lot of the scales are not totally accurate for the other large ships, so I would appreciate any suggestions for the overall length. The rest of the dimensioning will come naturally. I realize this ship is not used in many campaigns, but I want one for my displayed re-creation of the Corianna VI battle(all ships are suspended from ceiling, along with the planet- starscapes and nebula on walls not completed yet).

It is pretty hard to judge for sure but from the show it is clearly a lot larger than the vorlon cruisers. My guess is that it should be around the size of a frizbee (25-30 cm).

According to Jeff Russel's starship guide, the PK was 45 km in length compared to about 1.5 km for the vorlon cruiser. By that reasoning it should be 30 times the size of Mongoose's vorlon heavy cruiser.

If you really want it properly to scale (and assuming these firgures are accurate) you might be best off making out of the foam that they use to make surf boards. Link below for all sorts of starship scales.

Well, I just remembered from the show Marcus saying they were 3-4 miles across. Clearly trying to make it to true scale with all of the other ACTA ships will not feasible, since that would make the planet size larger than the entire room. I want to make it out of aluminum, since it is light enough for a ship this large, rigid enough(especially if I follow your suggestion of 30cm) to keep from falling apart, and soft enough for me to scribe the ultra fine details. I know I'm going to use a multi-layered candy painting technique to make the surface of it really look organic(like it's moving-changing angle of view will change how light hits it, thus changing the color/texture refracted). Thanks for your input :D

I think instead of making the planet spherical and hanging it from the ceiling, I'll paint it on the wall like the stars and nebula. I do want the VPK to be as close to accurate as possible- and this is the only viable option.

Going by Marcus's description of of 3-4 miles across and the Omega Destroyer being 1.7km (1.1 miles) long (all of the "larger" ships are in scale to this), about 12-16" would seem reasonable for a Planet Killer and also playable too :) About the size of a frisbee indeed!

Sounds interesting. Can we see pictures when it is done?

AoG did make a model of it in the Fleet Action scale, of which they said it (like the B5 station) could be used for either Fleet Action of B5W.

I don't see the point in making things to scale such that the model is so ridiculously large that it takes up the table. Given the 'scaleless' mechanics of ACTA I'd say any size would work.

Hopefully Mongoose puts this model back out into production.

But it won't be on a table- it is for a re-creation display of the Corianna VI battle, and all ships will be suspended from the ceiling. Yes, it could be used for gaming, but that is not my purpose in making it. Since it was the largest true starship used in the show, I want to be able to look at it when I'm done and say "OMG, that is awesome". And to Silvereye- yes, I'll be taking photos during the entire creation process. I think since it will be so large I may try doing it out of one solid block of aluminum. Aluminum is great for transparent metal candy effects when you use a colorless etching primer. Wish me luck- the CNC and waterjet are calling my name! :)

Planet Cracker.....hehehe....

I just have an image of a centauri bombardment cruiser looking at it's own mass drivers and slinking off with a feeling of inferiority.....

Given that the Shadow Cloud has it's own statline, why not?

Indeed. The VPK is clearly designed primarily for destroying planets rather than ship-to-ship combat so there is not reason why it could not reasonably represented at Armaggeddon level.

their were some pretty interesting stats bandied around on here i recall, insane number of hitpoints, one VERY big, but long charging gun

Given that it took the combined efforts of the other Ancients to destroy it, it would be a nice compliment for the already released Ancients set.

Make a nice scenario too, try destroy the VPK before it charges up and destroys the planet below.

That's exactly where it would work as it is far too lumbering to use its beam on anything short of a Space Station or drifting ship. In that context a 12" diameter VPK would actually work as it would be the focus of the scenario with perhaps ten turns to survive before being in position and ready to strike!

I've done stats before and as mentioned, it's all about getting the damage score right to last about the right length of time to force the enemy to have to take out some of the accompanying fleet to give themselves time to concentrate on it in the later turns. Too few and they can hit it early and win, too many and there's no chance of winning.

Either way, it should make one heck of a diarama. I can't wait to see it! :)

would love to see some of those stats...
