Vorchan and Demos .... oh my....

Mongoose
So I'm painting Centauri. lots and lots of ships. I finished a Vorchan, one of the six I got with my fleet box and it looks great. So I go to the rule book to plan which variant I'll use in my game. :( Not going to happen.

I don't see a single variation of this model that I'd take in any game I wanted to win. I knew the Skirmish level ships were weak, but what really blew me away was the Demos. WTF is up with that? The Dargon is three times the ship - it beats it in every single category. I swear I don't understand how the ships get designed for this game, I really don't.

To return to the age old question, is there a Vorchan variation that anyone uses?

The scout isn't bad in a Raid or above game. You can get a Vorchar and 2 Corvans instead of 3 Corvans.

Unfortunately the Vorchan is a contender for the nicest model in any of the ACTA ranges.

It is also easily the most seen Centauri warship in the series and one of most seen ship from any race in the series.

And every single variant in the game is completely useless. The Demos is just a sick joke.

I can only suggest you come up with your own unofficial stats and use it against friends who agree to this,

Cpt K.
PS It would be REALLY nice if someone came out with a version that was some good in V2. I am sick of Prefects, they are a crap model, just give us a half descent Vorchan instead.

My best idea is to use the Dargon stats verbatim and use the Demos (Vorchan) model. Of course that sidelines my Dargon model, but at least it's a viable contender.

The Vorchar is actually a good ship, you just can't afford to take an entire fleet of scouts! Rest assured, the whole Centauri fleet list will be looked at for 2nd ed., just like every other race :)

I have had good returns out of the standard Vorchan. You just cannot use it as ship of the line in any fleet though. Its a superb hitter for its level from the flanks or rear, it can outrun most fighters (including Sentris, sso don't try escorting it). Basically, treat them like baby White Stars, but use them in packs of two to three.

I stopped using them after my squadron of 3 failed to kill a strikehawk while CAF. AP just doesn't quite cut the mustard for all the other weakness eg 1 arc, low hits. Speed isn't a great bonus as it can be a hinderance a bit. Damn i wish Sentri's were faster. If you can get them to the rear they are useful but getting them there is a little tough. Either people aren't going to let do it by destroying them or they have Nova type ships where they just don't care because they are going get you anyway.
Destroying Vorchans that are trying to flank actually gives you the option to flank back which is bad for the Centauri. Better not do use them and sit back and beam your foes.

I actually got 7 vorchan in my fleet box (thanks for the quality control on that one mongoose!)

I only take them because atm I only HAVE the fleet box plus an Octurion. once I expand the fleet next year, the vorchan can expect to be left in the box every single time.

I have tried everything with these - opening a jump point to get them behind the enemy (takes too damn long to get into combat), rushing a flank, hanging back and hiding - All sorts of silly things and I have yet to make them work effectively, singly or as a squadron.

Considering they only have one arc, you would have thought the weapon would be better. Speed is nice, but tbh all it does is give the opponent something to shoot at sooner. If they had an advanced jump point, then perhaps they might be more useful as hit and run ships.

However, too frail, not enough firepower. only use them cos I have to, once I dont have to they are staying in the box.

Considering that the Vorchan is currently a Skirmish level ship how well does it stack up against other skirmish ships? (Comparing it to a Nova is a little much. Even though, in my opinion, it should be a bigger raid ship with the Demos being a battle ship... but that's me.)

It sucks.

Put simply its the biggest disappointment ever.

I only ever use them on convoy duty in campaigns to make people commit large forces for nothing.

They make good fire-ships aswell cause no one pays attention to them.

...

Ever

Compared to other skirmish ships...well now....

A Saggitarius will generally cripple it in a single turn before the thing had moved, has more Hits and and Interceptors to give it staying power.

An Artemis out guns its Plasma Accelerator has a few more hits and interceptors to give it staying power.

An Olympus is so much better its not funny that the joke of the Earth fleet is better than one of the most loved ships of the Centauri.

Hyperion variants shadow the Vorchan in all aspects.

A Brikorta and Ikorta will rip a Vorchan to shreds before it even decides to get into action.

A Mirata can peck it to death. As can the Milani.

Omelos have better firepower, more hits, and is only slightly slower.

All Drazi skirmishers are better armed or healthier.

Torotha comes close to being a bad ship but stealth 4 gives it a little more credibility than the Vorchan.

All the Narn level skirmishers come with a fighter flight or better weapons.

Raiders have better stats and decent fighter load despite a lower hull rating.

The Vree are more agile and have better weapons load outs.

Thus one Vorchan is..........................

Rubbish.

Vorchans are a bit naff true but I dont think theyre as bad as some poeple make out. Everyone seems to overlook the fact that they are speed 14. There are few ships in the game that even come CLOSE to that. Used in groups they can actually work (though I do agree they should be a bit better).

Oh and the Olypus is hardly teh 'joke of the EA fleet' its an excellent ship that many EA players rely on heavily to great effect (especially third age players who dont have the Beardittarius to rely on at skirmish :P)

He was referring to it being the joke of the fleet fluff wise - something that doesn't always make it through to the rules :P
