Vehicles of the Scout book

I very much like the vehicles from the Scout book, especially the Rapid
Survey Buggy and the All Terrain Mule, and intend to use them as the
colonists' standard vehicles in my new desert world setting.

Therefore it would be interesting to know whether their data are "final"
and compatible with the vehicle design system that will be published
soon in Civilian Vehicles, or whether I will have to "retroengineer" some
of the data to make the vehicles compatible.

Thank you. :D

Good question.

As a fan of integrated design rules I HATE when writers or publishers ignore their own design method when statting out equipment and vehicles. If they need some nifty thing to exist then design a new module for it so the rest of us can add it to our LEGO® kit of toys.

I realize that many times the decision to write a book requiring stats can out-pace the design system development but I think a codified system of design should be one of the fundamental building blocks for internal consistency of a system. Lack of it just shows sloppiness to me. After all the design system is one of the few things that often is a near constant among the many varieties of personal Traveller universes.

Well, the Scout ones don't give the full details so hard to tell but having just one speed when it's availalbe in both wheeled or tracked is off. My guess it was done with the vehicle design system in mind though. The vehicle design system wasn't finalized at the time Scout came out though.

This is no problem, but good to know. It means I will not give the players
fully detailed data sheets of the vehicles available to their characters and
will only use somewhat vague descriptions of these vehicles until Civilian
Vehicles is out and I have checked the data.

I had to design the Scout vehicles before the in-house design rules were finalised; in fact, they'd just started to take shape, so you may need to do a little retrofitting to make them work fully with the final vehicle rules when they emerge. It wasn't a deliberate act of malice, just one of those weird quirks of timing where you have to make a judgement call.
