On page 51 states 'any' skill takes a week's training. Then on page 52 it states it takes a month for an adventurer to emerge with an Advanced skill at its basic attribute score.

while one or other is probably a mistake, you could resolve this by saying that a weeks training applies the IR to any existing skill, but to learn a new advanced skill from scratch to the base starting score takes a month.
This is "sort of" justified in that picking up an advanceds skill for the first time gives you a much bigger increase than spending an IR on an existing skill...

I don't think there's a mistake.
On page 51: It says it takes a week training to "Improve" a skill. not open a new skill. AFAIK, you don't OPEN common skills, you're going to get your stats at base anyway.

On page 52: If you want to OPEN a NEW ADVANCED skill, it takes a month to do so.
This infers to IMPROVE an advanced skill via training (one you already have), it takes a week (being the same amount of time it would take to improve a common skill via training).

Or at least that's how it looks to me.
