Tournaments for Western Canada

I am going to be running a tournament at a convention out here in western Canada. I would like some advice from some of the other players. How do your tournaments run? Do they use missions out of the book? Did they use any weird scenerios? How were winners determined? Did sportsmanship and painting come into the calculations?
