I'm interested in finding out why people got into RQII, and in particular to what extent Glorantha was a factor.

Had heard nothing about Glorantha before I read the wiki articles. I was recommended RQ by my big brother who used to play the old RQ back in the early 90s. I feel in love with the system within the first 30 minutes of reading.

As for myself, I was more interested in getting a modernized, heroic-fantasy oriented, version of BRP than in Glorantha.

I started playing RQ with RQIII (Avalon Hill) specifically because it had been decoupled from Glorantha.

Glorantha has some interesting ideas, it just never grabbed me.

Yes. Me too.

I've played Runequest since Chaosium's second edition and I have no desire to play a game set in Glorantha. My love of Runequest was born of an increasing frustration with D&D's levels, classes and hit point inflation. Runequest just made more sense.

Over the years I've pulled out bits and pieces from Glorantha based materials and modified it to suit my purposes but I found out pretty quickly that Glorantha wasn't for me. I understand that any edition of Runequest has to have Glorantha as an available setting, but it does nothing for me.

I very much like the system, but to be honest I have trouble really caring about Glorantha. Fortunately, there are settings like Vikings, Deus Vult and Elric that I find much more interesting.

I'd just like to clarify what I meant by this option:

"I'm completely sold on both RQ and Glorantha."

My intention was that this would mean you'd buy RQ whether it had Glorantha as a fully supported setting or not, but you're also a full-bore Glorantha fan. Still, for the purposes of the poll I take it to mean you're firmly in the 'Glorantha helped sell me on MRQII' camp.

Been playing RQ in multiple settings all my gaming life. Really enjoying Glorantha Second Age right now but starting to get the itch to play other things.

Best way to put it:
I would buy RQ even if Glorantha wasn't supported.
I buy HQ products *only* because Glorantha is supported.

I ran lots of Chaosium RQII back in the early '80s, some of it set in Glorantha, but mostly in homebrew settings. I just picked up MRQ2 and am really liking the rules, but these days I have no interest in Glorantha as a setting. I purchased the rulebook for the rules only. I have purchased Elric, Deus Vult, and Vikings though, so I'm fine with the official non-Gloranthan settings.

I'm still trying to lure my group away from 3.5 D&D and into MRQ2. The original RQ2 had a magic system that was lacking, but now it seems pretty awesome.

Glorantha has no bearing in this, I'm doing a low magic old-earth cultures type of setting.

Big Chaosium/Avalon Hill RQ player. First MRQ turned me off.

This one has brought me back in a HUGE way. Love Glorantha. Had a campaign going, but my table top players decided they wanted something different, so I'm trying something else that incorporates the "cultural" aspect of Glorantha that keeps characters grey, instead of good/bad black/white.

If RQ didn't support Glorantha, I'm not sure I would believe it was RQ :)

You don't have to love Glorantha to see how it's ideas amd mechanics are awesome! Use what you want. Lucky for you, the RP police have yet to be founded.

I have no interest in Glorantha or any other fantasy world setting for that matter. I like Deus Vult and I'm interested in Vikings. Runequest rules are what Dnd 4e should have been. They are superior to all other rulesets.

I started with RuneQuest back in 1981 and stuck with it and Glorantha since [though for the past ten years I have played Hero Wars/HeroQuest mostly].

I think that RQ can handle many settings and its strength to some extent is the collection of settings it supports now.
It could always do with a few more new settings though, whether licensed IP, official, unofficial, third party, original or unoriginal.

I think that Mongoose should take a leaf out of Paizo's book and look closely at the subscription model like the Adventure Paths they did.

I suspect a project like that is only viable beyond a fairly high critical mass of likely subscribers. Once you commit to something like that, you're committed to delivering regardless of the subscriber base so it's quite a risk. As Paizo had already run the Dungeon Magazine franchise, they had a huge head start as they already had a loyal following used to that model.

In my younger days I enjoyed more crunch-heavy games, but as I get older I find that I prefer something more rules-lite. Something that is easier to create adventures for and easier to teach new players. I was attracted to MRQ2 because it is a simple yet elegant game that has all the elements I'm looking for in a fantasy RPG (though I would love to see the rules adapted to Sci-Fi or Modern as well).

The Glorantha setting doesn't really appeal to me, but I have looked at some of the other settings that MRQ2 supports like Clockwork & Chivalry and Vikings. I'm also hoping that Mongoose is able to renew the Conan license and adapt that setting for use with MRQ2, but even if they don't I'm sure that at some point I will run a Conan game using MRQ2.

I've been tracking the poll results throughout the day, and the consistency of the proportions of the results has been surprising. It's currently at 41 votes as I write this.

For example the first two options have consistently accounted for about half of the votes, while option 1 has never been far from 1/3 of the votes. This consistency leads me to believe that the results of the poll are probably pretty representative. If there had been more dramatic swings in the results breakdown I'd have less confidence in the poll.

Currently option 1 is at 12 votes and option 2 is at 10 votes. Other has been at 2 votes for quite a while.

Only option 1 and Other give no weight to familiarity with the Gloranthan setting as a factor in being interested in RQ2. This implies that about 2/3 of the people buying into RQ are doing so at least in part because of Glorantha. Glorantha seems to be a principal factor for a little less that half of respondents so far.

It'll be interesting to see if the results change much over the remaining lifetime of the poll, which is a few days.

Maybe another interesting poll would be

How are you using Glorantha in MRQII?
- not at all
- not using the world but mine the Glorantha books a little bit
- not using the world but mine the Glorantha books a lot
- playing in Glorantha

Writing polls is tricky, especially when you're trying to make it short and encapsulate a complex subject. For me, I answered 2 (I'm mainly an RQ fan, but Glorantha is interesting and a good source of ideas) because that was closest to my feelings. But I was interested in RQ for itself -- I've never played in Glorantha, have no intent to play in Glorantha, and would have bought RQ without a Glorantha connection.

But I do like Glorantha, and access to it with the same rule set is a fringe benefit. So while I stand by my vote, I do bristle that I'm in the category that you believe is buying RQ in part because of Glorantha. If that's the hypothesis you wanted to test, it would have been clearer to ask if Glorantha was an influence on your decision to buy.

With that wording, I would have said, "no" and gone with the new option 1.
