Hi,

I played out the "Ambush at Beta 3" scenario with a friend. And won (playing as the Centauri).

I would like to know:- what kind of tactics can the EA vessels use to win this scenario?

TIA,

Ian

Here's how my battle played itself out....

An Earth Alliance Hyperion-class cruiser (Hermes) wandered into Centauri space and was intercepted and attacked by two Cenatauri Vorchan class warships (Reefer Alpha and Reefer Beta).

The Hermes launched a flight of Aurora Starfury fighters against Reefer Alpha. They inflicted minor damage before being blown to pieces. There then became a twisting dodging battle between Reefer Alpha and Hermes. Reefer Beta was kept out of harm's way because I hadn't a clue as to how to deploy the 2 ships together. The Hermes had good all round but shorter range weapon systems than the Vorchans - they had long range weapons only firing in a forward arc. After Hermes and Reefer Alpha had damaged each other enough, the Reefer Alpha was retired to a defensive position. Reefer Beta took over and blew the Hermes into its component atoms.

To answer my own question, take a look at http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/pdf/sp49war.pdf on page 14 for a discussion of the first scenario (Ambush at Beta 3) and the others.

The scenario is really broken. One boresight ship versus 2 ships with a much higher initiative bonus, is never going to win except by extreme luck. S&P has good advice and it is the tips given there are the best way to maximize your chances... but really you're fighting a losing battle. The main weapon of a Hyperion will usually not kill a Vorchan outright, on average it will do 8 damage; less than half what a Vorchan can take.

Try the scenario with a Nova instead of a Hyperion. That would be a much more fair and fun battle.
