No, it's not the yuppie career class for traveller.......

So, a bud of mine was rolling up a traveller character for a new knockabout type campaign (he generated a despicable noble dilletant/rogue catburgler ).

He ended up with 8 shares in a yacht (out of 10 needed for a loan), and he says, so basicaly, until I get the sheres for a loan, what I have is essentially a timeshare, right ?

....interesting. The share system is presented a combination of favors and invertments, and until one gets the extra shares they are otherwise useless (and the party doesn't have them), I'm thinking, I like.

So, a suggestion for an additional use for the ship shares is as a rating of how likely the character is to be able to finangle a ride, or a loan of a ship. In short accessability.

For my player, given his nature, his shares work well as favors owed or dirt he's got on the owners - but it can easily represent a legitimate connection, favor or timeshare.

So, heres what I'm looking at.

If ship shares haven' t been initially applied to a loan or purchase, they can be used to gain access to a ship of that type. If generic shares, they can only be used on the scouts, yachts, lab ship or free trader -or the small craft.

Once per month, a character can attempt to make a roll to get a loaner or a charter free of cost. Roll is 14+, Soc or Int, and bargain or persuade may be used.
Each such roll permanently removes one ship share.

Additionally, extra shares may be committed to give a +dm to the roll equal to the number of shares. These are not lost, but may only be used for one roll per year.

The duration of the loan or charter is 1 month x effect dice up to 6.
The timing die is how many days it takes to get the ship, if successful.

The loan may include appropriate and generally annoyed NPC crew if needed skills are unavailable in the party. Character is responsible for fuel after the first tank, and all incidental expenses after the first month, except for NPC salary. The character is in charge, but really shouldn't push it.

Any legal issues, fines or damage are the characters responsibility, and may well generate a new enemy if he fouls up really badly.

Any public profit must be shared at least 50/50 between the owner and NPC crew, and the character (and hopefully), the party.

I like that take on it and for a Noble type, it fits very well.

Consider it the family Yacht that he and his sister Buffy and little brother Bif all have to share.
