There are two eras (Both for the game and in the anthologies).
From the early books in the 80's (The Rankan Era): At least the first three anthologies can still be bought new as one volume. They are all I've ever read. The later anthologies I've heard overall aren't as good but that is heresay.
The Irrune Era is recent, takes place a while after the original Rankan Era, and the books are all recent. First is the Lynn Abbey novel Sanctuary, followed by two more anthologies, all which should be in print. They are on my to read list.
So you can get much of it easily.
And the Green Ronin source material is very good and there is a lot of it (they have probably about twice as many words per page as a runequest book - narrow margins, smaller text, all on a white background so I find them easier to read despite the smaller font size). I would feel comfortable running a game in the Irrune era using the GR books alone based on the source without having read any of the new books (yet). I would think you could enjoy the setting having never read any of the books - and the sale prices are fantastic.
