I was just checking the preview of next month's S&P and it says that the 1st HALF of the Russian Fleet article will be in it!!!

You can start singing the Soviet Anthem from The Hunt for Red October now :)

I was just about to post a topic for Mr Evil to wrap himself into like a warm comfy blanket and saw yours, so here's to Mr Evil's wishes coming true. Well, at least half of them, heh.

Bear hug for sure, but am not going to insult the Author with warm vodka - will serve him with cold samogon instead! :D

1/3000 from Skytrex, Navwar, a few from Strongold and a few scratchbuilt. You can get just about anything that you are likely to want in a game in this scale, or can find a good enough proxy.

I would recommend 1/6000, 1/3000 or 1/2400 for those looking to collect. My collection is both in 1/2400 and 1/1200.

we realy should choose a scale though otherwise were get to a tournament and find ships of the same type 2-3 times bigger and would look awful on the table top.

Yes, we wouldn't want the smaller-scale ship chap made to feel underarmed, of course. Seriously though, you do have a valid point. The rules wouldn't care, but the visual "look" is one of import. I would first find out what scale the Mongoose studio collection is in, and go from there for those (like you) close to the VaS naval HQ. My guess for those mostly in the U.S. is that the popular 1/2400 scale will be a good choice as many of the manufacturers offer that scale. I eventually would like to get all of the world's fleets in the newer 1/6000 scale, just for the compact size of the minis (and the lower cost).

1/3000 is the "standard" scale in the UK. 1/6000 was loookingas though it would become a real contender until Hallmark sold out to Noble and the prices went up. Now the cost oif a 1/6000 mini of a battleship isn't all that different from the same ship in 1/3000.

1/1200 would be good but at £10 to £40 (at least) for a BB its a bit pricey, so I only use it for destroyer and cruiser actions, and 1/600 or 1/700 for coastal (or "specials" such as the NWS refight of North Cape on board HMS Belfast)

Scales -

1/6000 - I've now seen oggies in the flesh, and while I imagine they are very quick to paint, they are very small. Really small. Like you would lose it on the table small.

1/3000 - This is the scale Navwar do and the scale Mongoose have been using and this seems perfectly fine. You can get a fleet pack (6 capital ships, 4 cruisers, 8 destroyers) for £9.00 or $20ish US (or whatever the dollar is worth now, who knows?). Looks to me to be the best balance between cost and detail.

1/2400 - GHQ do this scale, and they look perfectly fine.

1/1200 - You'd have to be smoking something to collect in this scale. Unless it is cruiser and smaller level. And you'd still have to sell a kidney.

I'm just glad I bought my 1/1200 scale collection over 20 years ago, as I am quite fond of my kidneys, heh.

1/1200 doesn't have to be that pricey, but you ahve to shopa round. I know a few dealers who often have surplus ships going cheap, and if you go to some of the collectors fairs you an often pick up a bargain. There are also a few plastic ships available (for example the current Revell kits, which used to be the old Esci ones, and before that the were marketed by Almark, also various models by Airfix, Pyro etc.)

A few years ago I picked up around 60 mixed ships for a steal of $75 at a convention. It was mostly destroyers, but there were some cruisers included too. At just over a dollar a ship, I was amazed at that find. It added to my US and IJN fleets, and filled in some gaps in my smaller ships. I haven't gamed with these for quite awhile, but as a collection they are great to take out and look at from time to time. I'm most proud of my measure 33 painted US battleships, cruisers and carriers. The paint was from the Floating Drydock (they're still around on the web, too), and the paint was supposed to be accurate to the wartime specs. I don't really give that much of great importance, as natural weathering would take its toll quickly enough to alter the original colors.
