The Naval Wargames Society

I've mentioned the NWS here a few times and had a couple of messages asking what it was. The NWs is the Naval Wargames Society. Given the interest in naval wargaming generated by VAS I thought it would be appropriate to post some publicity material for the Naval Wargames Society here (I've cleared this with Matt).

The Naval Wargames Society (NWS) was formed in the 1960s by legendary naval wargamer "Phil Dunn" (author of "Sea Battle Games") with the aim of promoting naval wargaming throughout the world and to act as a forum for the exchange of information and ideas for the development of the hobby. To this end the NWS produces a magazine entitled ‘Battlefleet’, and a monthly PDF newsletter, "All Guns Blazing".

Membership of the NWS is by subscription to “Battlefleet”, and is based upon a four-issue volume. Members joining part way through a subscription period receive all back issues of the current volume. It is intended that the journal will be issued four times per annum, with the first issue in Late Summer/Autumn, final issue early Summer (although in rare cases the subscription period may be extended to guarantee consistency of the quality and content). As well as articles covering all periods and aspects of naval wargaming from ancient galleys to modern carriers and submarines (and beyond), Battlefleet also includes model, hobby and naval news and reviews of models, rules, books and other items that are of interest to naval wargamers. Members' advertisements and queries are included free of charge.

Other benefits of membership include discounts offered by manufacturers and retailers, including A & A Game Engineering, Chiltern Miniatures, David Vanner, Denian Models, Dreadnought Models, Langton Miniatures, Partizan Press, Peter Pig, Portsmouth Miniatures, Skytrex, White Ensign Models and MY Miniatures.

Members in the UK also have the opportunity to join in NWS regional activities and the now legendary NWS Holiday (plans currently in and for a trip to the Ukraine in Summer 07)

The society also publishes a monthly email -newsletter that includes forthcoming events, battle reports and other information. The newsletter, entitled ‘All Guns Blazing’ is an excellent means of promulgating details of forthcoming events, plus battle reports, news items and other bits and pieces.

The NWS has a website at

www.navalwargamessociety.org

Updates are a bit patchy (the webmaster in the US is extremely busy) but important stuff like subscription information and contacts should be up to date
