The Legend "OGL"

Vile

Banded Mongoose
This is really addressed to the powers-that-be in a plea for more information on the nature of the proposed "openness" of Legend. I can see that an SRD would be a bother to produce, but what exactly will this mean for commercial 3rd party publishers?

Is the intent that the text as a whole will serve as an SRD, or will the text be off limits but supplements that use the core books can be published? The latter actually makes more sense to me.

Finally, I would suggest that a Legend Logo Licence (LLL!) be made available in a similar vein to the Traveller Logo Licence. The terms are far from onerous, but they clearly spell out both Mongoose's and the 3PP's rights and obligations. I think anyone who wishes to produce print products would be more than happy to deal with this minor additional complication.

I can of course see that it might be a problem for Mongoose, if you are inundated with licence requests from would-be 3PPs, 99% of whom will never actually produce anything. But judging from the relatively few Pathfinder licencees on the Paizo site this should be worth the effort if it allows Mongoose to at least know who is using your brand and how they are doing so. Even if it is open, it is still one of the public faces of Mongoose and I'm sure you would not wish to see a repeat of a certain 3PP D20 supplement of mature content ...

At the moment, this is all open for debate - all we have done thus far is state our intentions. We won't get into the nuts and bolts of this for a little while yet.

In the meantime, if there are any publishers wanting to get involved in Legend, I suggest they drop me an email to tell me what they want to see!

I guess the easiest thing to do is to just put a declaration of open content in the books and place the OGL license at the end of the book. Making it OGL makes it so that stuff using the 1st edition SRD is easily accessible for combining it with any new stuff.

For example:

Legend Core Rules Copyright 2011 Mongoose Publishing

All text in this book is considered open gaming content. Everything else is considered Product Identity.
