The Forbidden Question

Given the great diversity found in RPG fans these days, I've decided to test the waters and ask the Forbidden Question :cue scary music:

........and that is simply this: Are there any female forumites on the boards who play Conan? And if so whatever possessed you to be here instead of over at White Wolf with its gender-friendly setting (everything used to be written with "She" instead of He) or Chaosium with its avowedly "gender-neutral" setting?

I guess the deeper question i'm asking is: Can there be such a thing as a female Conan fan? :P

Hi there :)

(I heard a rumour that WW doesnt believe in me (malkiedawn) anymore, so i wouldnt want to upset them by visiting their forums, woman friendly or not!)

(I love CoC, but hate websites with black backgrounds!)

Currently playing in 3 Conan games and resting one character.

See online games - Legends of Zamora for more details.

So do i qualify as a female Conan fan.

Oh yes, I definitely am female too.

My wife runs a mid-level pirate (a rather amoral, bloodthirsty one at that), and is now reading the Conan stories. Outside of my cajoling, what brought her in was the low-magic, rich and varied settings of Hyboria. She's appreciated the fact that weeks can go buy without a sinister supernatural encounter, and that she can focus on role playing more.

She definitely recognizes the difficulties of being a female in Hyboria, but looks at it as a challenge to overcome versus something insulting. At least in Hyboria, sexism is overt!

she is also a member of the slaine game on these boards and everyone is welcome to read about her and the kings adventures in the challenge of the gulls(but please no posting unless a pc comments welcome in the slaine forum 8) )

I'm running three Conan games at the moment one on a Monday evening with one female and two male players, one online with one female player (see above) and another on every second Friday with Three female players and only one male player. I have also got another female player who has a character but who is not in any of my current games as she is playing a WW / WoD game at the moment.

I'm running a weekly Conan game and currently have 2 women playing. They're a Pirate and Barbarian and seem to have really taken to the game.

As to your original question, I'm not them but I can answer that they are playing Conan because I introduced the group to the system. That said though they have taken to it quiet readily, more so than Eberron (our previous 2 campaigns).

Again I can only estimate what my players are feeling but my perception is that the Conan setting is very captivating. It's flavorful and iconic without seeming stereotypical. Not to knock other fictional settings and even though they are what the steriotype is based on there is a "ho hum, another party of elves, dwarves, and hobbits fighting Orcs" feeling to a lot of others. Conan has enough recognition for everything to seem epic and iconic but been enough in the background to keep from seeming tired.

In particular my women players seem to particularly enjoy interacting with the world and they really seem to enjoy the action within the system. Our entire last session was them participating in physical challenges set out as part of a week long festival to Bel amongst the Pirates of the Arogssen Coast. The action really captured them.

Again it's all my take on what they seem to react to and what they've told me but there it is.
