Sounds like a simple patents grab. Be the first to find something remotely plausible/defensible and claim all future discoveries with any relation at all as covered by their first patent.

Cancer is going to be a big problem if telomere extension therapies ever prove out as effective. Possibly that's in-game fodder for why interrupting your anagathic regime is a bad idea in Traveller-esque universes.
