Once again Reality(tm) seems to be catching up to Traveller. Anyone remember the PRIS goggles from MegaTraveller?

Well...

These are the first few baby steps but imagine a pair hooked up to some microprocessors like those in today's cutting edge cellphones. Now..imagine the potential military, engineering, and scientific uses.

This is why I SERIOUSLY want the tech and equipment-by-tech scale revised.
I am waiting for a book to arrive from Amazon UK - "Physics of the future - The inventions that will transform out lives" by Michio Kaku.

In my opinion, it is impossible keeping up to date with real life inventions. You can only come up with something reasonably plausible for YTU.

Technology feeds on itself to increase the rate of its own increase.

Travellers tech charts were out of date when they were first written back in the 70s, you know 40 odd years and a century ago

Improvements in computing allow for improvements in other fields that then allow for more improvements in computing.

Much of that tech 10 to 12 stuff in Traveller isn’t so far off. Look at the pair of jeans with the key board in the fabric, the mouse you hold in the air which senses its own movement, visors, thousands more things.

Many people never use actual cash, debit/credit cards paving the way for cred sticks.

Cloned meat coming later this year, medical advances that haven’t even made it into Traveller yet.

With mobile/cell phones having more processing power than the last moon shot, the ability to walk around with full internet access and function plus music, camera and video, email, texting, tweeting, financial transactions etc in your pocket. Oh and they make phone calls as well. Where will we be in 20 years, never mind the OTU.

The way I see it, Traveller is a game that emulates some aspects of reality in order to make the game more immersive in an attempt to maximize fun. Any Traveller universe is an emulation, not a simulation. Therefore, any Traveller universe should be consistent within itself but simply cannot be consistent with reality since the human species has yet to discover what all the aspects of reality are.

Personally, my Traveller universe follows the expanding/collapsing universe model. The jury is still out on which model the real universe follows and may have gone permanently out to lunch on the subject.
