Tales of the Black Kingdoms -The good, the bad, and the ugly

I'm about to finally run a Conan game and would like to get some feedback on the adventure book Tales of the Black Kingdoms. Did you like it? What worked and what didn't?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'd advise that you do some searches through this forum, there's been a lot of discussion about TotBK since it was released with lots of opinions and advice on running it.

Personally I think it's a pretty good series of adventures, though somewhat illogical in places. It does need some thought beforehand and some editing to make it hang together well.

Anyhow have a search and then come back with any particular questions.

I did a search. I got some 800 returns and have neither the time nor the inclination to wade through them. I do not have any specific questions at this time. I am more interested in peoples thoughts and their own experiences.

Try doing a search with the "Search for all terms" option selected and only in the Conan forum, you'll get back about 55 results.

There's a handful of discussions that will stick out, I can see at least one play test review that should be helpful.

This is a good thread for you.

Me and my group had a lot of fun with this mini-campaign.
Shroud Over Zabhela was fun because it had some cool scenes and turned out to be a total bloodbath when we ran it (a room filled with naked cultists and a ritual that needs to be stopped... yeah, there was blood alright! ).
Ruins of Atlaia was great because it was quite open-ended; you just have this cool location and some interesting NPCs, and the PCs are pretty free to handle it as they see fit. Probably my favorite scenario of the three.
The Red Citadel was probably the scenario we enjoyed the least, but it was absolutely OK.

Some random stuff that I remember from running the scenarios (it's been awhile):

* The four PCs in my group started out at 4th level and I let them advance one level per adventure, so the last scenario they were at level 6. This worked out fine.

* I omitted all involvement of the Scarlet Hand from the plot until the last scenario (it simply did not make any sense to me). Instead, I had Alam'Enshadar just show up in Ruins of Atlaia by coincidence; he was going to buy slaves and then just tagged along with Orafa. After the PCs killed off Orafa, Alam'Enshadar sort of joined the group (although they never trusted him, of course) and at the end of that scenario he ran off with the sceptre. The Red Citadel then started with the group having chased after Alam in search of the sceptre. Oh yeah, I did let the sorcerer in the group get a peak of a Scarlet Hand tattoo that Alam had while dressing his wounds at one point (he rolled extremely well on his Knowledge Is Power roll, so I let him recognise it as belonging to a society known as the Scarlet Hand). That meant that he knew were to look for Alam. Actually, the whole motivation for going after the sceptre (and getting into the events in The Red Citadel) came from this sorcerer PC; I had him get very attached to the sceptre ( ) and he managed to convince the rest of the group that it was of utmost importance that they get it back...

* When the PCs arrived in Zabhela at the start of the first scenario, I had Artelios and his daughter Tarethis come down and great the ship at the docks. This meant that there was actually a reason for Tarethis to be there so the PCs could get all heroic and rescue her from the lion (otherwise it's just coincidence that she happens to be there, which I didn't like).

* If I were to run it again, I'd probably try to scale down the number of NPCs that tag along with the group in Ruins of Atlaia. I'd definitely kill off Artelios earlier on, for example; he was just sort of there in the background when I ran it, and I was to busy with other, more important NPCs to have him actually do anything.

That's all I can think of right now, but if you have any specfic questions, I'll be happen to answer them. :)

Oh, and welcome to the boards!

Thanks. This is exactly what I was looking for and that thread was excellent.
