Starship Troopers

Mage

Mongoose
Well, it has been a while since the announcement, and a lot of people are worried about the state of 'our' game.

Since the content of this particular forum has become speculation and to a degree bitching (which even I have been a part of), I have chosen to start this thread, about starship troopers, and what we, the gamers are doing with it. It can be easy to sabre rattle when things look grim, but if there is so much hype and complaints about evo, things not happeneing with the old game, I can only assume people complain because, in essence, they are worried and want their game to stay.

Starship Troopers has not changed. Players are still players and still have the rules and miniatures.

So a question I'm putting out there:
What are you guys doing with Starship Troopers?

As for disagreeing with what I say, the bithcin stops with my post here. If you do not like something I wrote PM me or start a thread on it. But not here, only STarship Troopers material, please. IF you feel disenchanted with the game, check the first page or two of the forum, you'll find a place for it.

Anyhow, here we go.

With college, I had no time for games. Now with my new job, I am meeting my gaming buddies on Friday after work and we will talk about having a regular miniatures gaming night. Sean and Liam are pushing for a Necromunda campaign, and I hope to demo and eventually have a starship troopers night, or at least coverage of it on a game night.

Today, I ordered a few components, such as LAMI models, the Razak model, some bases, a Military intelligence agent, some bases, and the arachnids army book. Obvisouly I needed the army book, and the other bits, for the most part, are to give me conversion opportunities for my LAMI platoon, so all the LTs, NCOs, Corporals and sergeant are not identical. I am not good at metal and sawing, so may need to get a kit, or get one of my buddies at the LGS to do it.

I also wrote out a detailed document about my plans for the game, fluff, and a narrative.

Well I ran two big games back in July and bought a ton of stuff in August.

Some stuff I got done in June and July for the game can be seen here:

http://www.goldwyrm.blogspot.com/

Included in that work was making some MI on Quad conversions.

I'm also working on a Spugs army list for SST as one of the fringe alien races. In my fluff they are part time Skinnie allies and enemies of the Arachnids. To humans they're still Bugs unless the real Bugs become too much of a problem.

Next month myself and another local GM are running a cooperative large game at a local game da. My 4x16 foot Bug Canyon board will have my friend's 4x8 Bug Crater board inserted in between to make a 4x24 Canyon/Crater/Canyon board. I expect we could have in the neighborhood of 10,000-12,000 points per side if we go crazy. We're planning for about 12 players.

We've got about a half dozen people collecting SST figures. More people than that play in our hosted scenario games, since we seem to prefer SST for scenarios rather than tournament style play. One group of Sci-fi players I run with is using Warmachine as their tournament style game right now.

Other stuff I'm planning to eventually do with SST:
1) converting a pair of GI JOE Dragon hawks into a Slingshots/Viking hybrid
2) converting a pair of Testors 1/48 scale Soviet Ferret Stealth fighters into TAC fighters
3) Building my Exosuit platoon with those RE magnets
4) Look into collecting some more Skinnies beyond the plastic set.
5) Building a Skinnie village.
6) Some force list conversions because I have way too many other Sci-fi models.

Last school year was great because 2 of the 4 of us living in a nice house were avid SST players, and 1 more of us built and painted, so 3/4 were fans explicitly and we were all gamers, and on top of that some of our BFs/GFs played and couple of other friends.

It was paradise!

Now I am graduated but I was able to score the same house for four of our friends, and most of us are still in the RI area but I as ring leader for SST (I made all the terrain and boards and have 2 armies and such) now live in Boston so Im an hour and a half away :(

That being said, One player still lives at the house, I painted his skinny army this summer, built him some custom skinny marauders, and am going to help him build his own set of boards. Then i will loan him a ton of terrain, as well as books and rulers. People now come and visit me too in boston to play.

SO we don't play as much but we still do, and are looking forward to new rules and such.

As far as modelling I made a new jungle set this summer, built up some bugs, painted a squad of MI, constructed a massive Queen Bug, a big ass Mantis Tanker bug, custom skinny marauders....

But now I've kinda halted a bit... my job is in RI, my GF and I rent an apartment in Boston, and I sleep at my parents house in RI allot lol! So its hard to find free time to model, also I'm just a tad burnt out... Sigh I wish I was working 3rd shift again, its much easier to do modelling when its day out than night!

But I have more stuff to work on an alien vegetation terrain set, and I need to build 3 more warrior bugs to reach 180 bugs exactly... and I'm repainting 4 or 5 squads of cap troopers... then I'm painting some rebels, then I'm allowed to buy new things lol!

GCSE's last year(s) have been halting my progress.
A levels are gonna be worse.
I'm looking at SST with an open view though. I can't wait for the new skinnies to come out and am planning to do a walkthrough of me painting and designing a brute force.
This may be hindered by my job (when I find one) to hinder this.

Rob, you are a good painter, and it will be interesting to see how you tackle repainting the prepaints that are expected.

Gauntlet, it is so cool the way you have so many players, and I hope you get more time to game.

Goldwyrm, the canyon is nice, and I like the wasp troopers you got.

Over the next few days I will post my collection, plans, fluff, and progress of my meeting about the miniature games.

Most of the stuff is on my new laptop, which unlike this one, which is broken, cannot use our internet connection. Also, I cannot find my memory stick, so it will take a while to transfer stuff.

Anyway, each week I hope, rather each fortnight, to run 300 point demoes, 1000 point, 1500 point and 2000 point games, encouraging the lads to paint and expand their army/ies.

I have planned planned and planned, and already have a sizeable collection of miniatures.

Rebuilding my Website, with areas open for comments and discussions that are MEMBERS only (thats where all the copyrighted material will be).

Thats my main task at the moment.

I demo the game (both rulesets) in and around Sydney a few times a year, either at Tin Soldier shops or at 'cons. At present it's taken a backseat to ACtA:2 but we'll be squashing bugs again soon!

Cheers
Mark

just bought a load of bugs to boost the forces (brain, plasma etc)
Other half is working on Skinnies
Ran a large multiplayer game in August

not getting much time due to work though at present :(

My D&D game is on hiatus for a couple of months due to holidays so I'm hoping to get the guys to play a few games of SST.

I'm finishing off my Pathfinders (+ neodogs) and MI Sprite conversions.
Then painting my aircraft (a mix of Old Crow and Grendel models).
Next big job (probably for the Christmas break) is my skinnies starting with painting the venerables and venerable marauder.

I need to get lots of undercoating done before the weather turns nasty.

Hmmmmm....
Demoed for two new players, one of whom liked it so much he's gonna buy a Marauder platoon (Handed my ass too me 7 times in a row as well... my bug army isnt very balanced :D).

Finally got 3 sets of those King Kong insect toys for interesting proxies/new bugs.

Did some very basic work on a Mutant Chronicles/Warzone conversion (Been running the RPG and its gaining alot of converts, so it seems a good way to get more people into my favourite wargame :D).

Got back in contact with my usual SST opponant and we're gonna try out some Evo games someday.

I must admit that I have somewhat ground to a halt with my SST until recently. I have been very limited in my free time lately (don't you hate it when real life interferes with your gaming?  ), and I have been mainly focusing on BF:Evo lately since I am a member of the MI. I think (aka hope) that things will be evening out for me so I will be able to get out and play more, and now that the SST:Evo card are out I am going to start to push that more as a demonstrator as well.

We also have a large con that will be here in town next year (Conquest Las Vegas, April 18 - 20 at Bally's Hotel and Casino) and I am already looking at making terrain for my events there. I had built a small skinnie village last year and I am thinking about doing this again (I gave away the buildings to one of the kids that plays locally).

Here is a work in progress shot of the village since I can't find any right now of the completed village.

For the most part I really liked how they turned out but I must admit that towards the end I ran out of time and money. At the actual event, a couple of the buildings were missing some of the smaller details (aka doors  ) but it still worked out really well. This time I have time for more planning and construction and I really think that I can turn out some nice looking pieces.

dyssnowman, I too have been buying up "dinnerware" to use as terrain for SST. I've got some square plates and bowls than said "Forth" to me  and last night bought some round bowls (large and small) for a Skinnie village I might put together. I already had found months back some vases that could be adapted to form into the Skinnie village in the CGI series.

I've just finished a major project that I'll probably post in a few weeks here. It will probably (humbly stated of course) be inspiring to those that are waiting for the "second coming" of SST. :)

Actually it is not dinnerware and I didn't buy it. It is all made out of the containers that you get fresh cut fruit in (watermelon, pineapple, etc.) at the grocery store and it was all free. Best price in the world. :D

I had even made a skinnie heavy laser turret but I can't find the pics at the moment. I think that I might have deleted them, but I am hoping to find them hiding somewhere on my hard drive.

Free is good! :D

At least I waited for my stuff to go on clearance at 30% off. What I liked about what I found was that the pieces interlock in a nifty way. It allows me to stack them inverted and I don't have to glue them into a dedicated gaming structure. They could still be used as bowls and plates . I'll probably makes decals/stickers for windows and doors and keep that "easy".

Good to see you gys are still doing stuff!

I patiently await a component order and some other stuff, and hope to finish my tamnker and ripplers next week.

I'm gonna post pictures of my MI on monday when I have time (working twelve hours saturday and twelve over sunday/monday). I'll show my LAMI, power suits, and exos, maybe even some of my nicomplete skinnie army.

I wish I could say that the SST scene is good here in Leeds. I gave a friend a copy of the current rule book to try to get some interest going.. it hasn't worked.

I may try and hold a demo game some point soon as I have quite a large LAMI and a regular has a lot of bugs, this way it would look like the film in table top gaming format, which I'm sure a lot of the kiddies who play 40K will love.

If that fails, I may be selling all my SST barring the LAMI on ebay. Think the game was last palyed two years ago.

Shame.
