Stacking counters question

Mongoose
My battleship has an aircraft immediately in front of it. My Speed has been reduced by damage.

It is impossible for me to move without finishing on top of the aircraft, but by the rules I MUST move at least 1".

What do I do?

The no stacking rule is primarily designed to prevent ship counters from stacking one on another, which clearly is not possible. I think you could probably be forgiven for doing what would essentially be moving a vessel underneath a flight of aircraft.

Of course the rules lawyers might have had a common sense bypass on this point but purely from the point of view of what is happening during the movement phase, the planes are in all likelihood going to move shortly after the ships have moved and even if this particular flight is not going to move then it is not going to impact too greatly if the flight is moved to one side in order to facilitate the no stacking rule, even if it happens slightly out of turn sequence.

I would say just shift the aircraft counter/model out of the way. There are no rules to cover this so it cannot be lawyered...

The problem does become more obvious though if you have two ships one passing in front of the other and the slower ship cannot clear the other ship but must still move its 1" forwards...

Very true. I've just checked in the book, p.5. it says:

"Ships may never be stacked on top of one another. A player may never end his movement 'on top' of another ship."

So, no mention of planes then. :o

With regards to vessels moving on to other vessels, any ship should have adequate turning capability to avoid a collision and even if they do not, no sane captain (i.e. one who wants to keep their command) is going to put their ship into a position where they are going to be rammed, even by a smaller vessel.

What I'm trying to say in a round about way is, do not permit players to move their ships into this situation in the first place (threat of smacked bottom usually works unless they enjoy that sort of thing) or if you have some fundamental objection to this, wiggle the counters around a bit to simulate the invariable panic arising out of the "what the f***, Sh*t! Sh*t! Sh*t!'" effect.

Let's face it, what two consenting adults do within the privacy of their own home/club is up to them. Hang on a minute, what's this sticking from the spine of my rulebook. A bug! Oh no the rules police are coming for me again!
