So I have ship a movement of 8. It's got a -4 speed and just went crippled (1/2 speed). Is it immobile or does it have a move of 2?

In other words, do you take the half speed first of the -4 first?

8/2 = 4 - 4 = 0
or
8 - 4 = 4/2 = 2

Previous rulings in ACTA state that speed criticals are applied to the maximum speed of the vessel, and then halved for crippled.

As a practice, I would agree with you, however Matt has also ruled the opposite.

Speed 8 - Half speed due to Crippled = Speed 4. - 4 Speed Crit = parked.


The question is which speed reduction takes precident. If Crippling is first, the above applies, if the Speed Crit does, then you are speed 2. Since we have had 2 different answers for this, I would use the one that makes more sense, which IMHO is speed 2.

I like Chern's explanation better, but if there's a ruling that says otherwise...

The thing that made me think that it ISN'T parked is that there's a "Speed 0" critical. The others are just penalties and I didn't think they were meant to take a ship out of the game - why would a sturdy Primus be nurfed by crits that would only slow a weak Vorchan?
 
I believe this is answered in the Armageddon FAQ, and we were suprised as it was the reverse of what we had previously thought -- it is, indeed, speed zero.

If a ship suffers a critical hit resulting in loss of Speed and is then Crippled, halve the speed for it being Crippled, then deduct the Speed penalty of the critical hit.
 
which is the opposite of his previous ruling. I guess everyone's entitle to change their mind. Shich brings into question the order of crits/crippling in VAS even more...

Mass Drivers have become ship-enders with this and the speculative fire ruling. Just warning speed 8 or less (and expecially speed 4 stuff like the Bin'Tak; -2 speed crits are easy to find) folks downrange of Rohrics, Khatriks, Wahants, and Mankhats.

Ship go boom.
 
so essentially fast flimsy ships have a less chance of being left dead in space by speed crits? :?
