Confederation Navy: Skill Distribution

There are a number of odd specializations, more in the sense you probably need them, but can't quite figure out how to integrate them into character generation.

Medical doctor is probably a two term learning process, until certification, and the Navy could hand out scholarships, in exchange for service, and/or reserve status, considering the assumption is that you won't need a lot of them, until a general conflict breaks out.

Also, you don't want to unnecessarily repeat skills, or diverge too much from the logical acquirement of them, much as I would like to allocate engineering/life support to medical professionals.

Assuming not much differs from medical training in three millenia, a doctor would need medical/two, though I'm not too sure how the given specializations gel with actual practice, or surgeon, dentist, or general practitioner.

Then you have the issue with support staff, such as medical orderlies, or nurses, or dental hygiene assistants.

By modern traditions, the ship's doctor is a commissioned officer, and recalling the Pacific campaign movies of the Great Patriotic War, so were the nurses.

Whereas a couple of centuries previously, the ship's surgeon would be a warrant officer, if not a locally recruited barber surgeon.

There's no actual medical course in a military academy, which means university graduate, whether direct, as presumably an Honours student at twenty two, or post medical career applicant, with possibly no age limit, but minimum physical and mental characteristics.

Naval boot camp offers a medical path for new recruits, in that one of the two optional skill slots would be medical/zero, which would be what, premed or candystriper?

The second slot took me a minute, but then I remembered that the original airline stewardesses were trained as nurses, and steward was a skill looking for a home.

Presumably, medical/one qualifies them as certified nurses.

Which could be designated as Nurser.

Then there are the legal eagles, and the soul comforters.

And, as I was trying to figure out exactly how the clerical work, by the non clerics, was accomplished, the secretarial pool.

Since following the rules is likely an essential aspect of the Navy, within their own perspective, cadets who are inclined to be barrack lawyers are guided to the Legal Branch, rather than bringing in outsiders.

Chaplains are likely to clash with the attached Solomani Security officer, and I'm not sure that even the Imperium Navy has that, though the Aslan do have a meditation room, onboard their spacecraft.

Assuming a Chaplain is assigned to major combatants, and capital starwarships, it would be like medical doctors, recruited from outside the Navy, or a Naval officer suddenly sees the light, non solar, and asks to transfer to this branch.

Someone needs to run the Service, and I always thought that administrative officer requirement didn't seem quite appropriate; first, I wanted to give the role to Logistics, which would simplify the organizational chart, but ran out of skill slots.

So, mostly non commissioned personal assistants, to help with the paperwork for each department.

Confederation Navy: Patrol Ship

1. Looks like I have flesh out the patrol ship, finally.

2. First, you have to either pick out the weapon systems, or engineering, to build it around.

3. Weapon systems are less important on a patrol ship, being more a way to exert presence, and to see over the hill.

4. Engineering can be customized, but, I've established that the Confederation has a set of standard sizes, one of which would be thirty five tonnes.

5. So, the patrol ship would be built around a thirty five tonne jump drive.

6. Next would be allowing a smallcraft specialist to leverage his skill to a starship.

7. That would mean restricting the primary hull to a maximum tonnage of ninety nine.

8. On the other hand, that makes it somewhat awkward calculating the tonnage of attached hulls.

9. Though, a one tonne external cargo mount could be utilized for spacecraft consumables.

A. Since there's a manoeuvre drive, and a jump drive, installed, can't use a primitive hull.

B. In theory, the ideal volume would be either seventy tonnes, with three firmpoints, or fifty tonnes, for a cockpit..

C. In practice, you can't fit in a thirty five tonne jump drive, and likely a fuel tank of fifteen tonnes, together with a bridge, manoeuvre drive, power plant, and life support, into either.

D. That's because unless you externalize all the fuel, you're going to be short fifteen tonnes, with three thirty five tonne drop tanks.

E. So far, no indication that you can actually conjure two firmpoints, or hardpoints, on a drop tank.

F. If you could, would be quite happy to maximize fuel externalization.

G. Under the current High Guard, you can't use cockpits as control centres for spacecraft larger than fifty tonnes.

H. We can install a specialized control centre for flight operations, for flight operations, in this case three tonnes, for a hull under a hundred tonnes.

I. Sensor operations can be undertaken by a sensor station, though I would think that flight operations would include that, if only viewable by the pilots.

J. Engineering operations can be performed at the source.

K. Which would nominally leave fire control, and jump operations.
