so RQ conan. What would you do ?

So it seems that RQ Conan isnt happening. That doesnt mean you cant make it happen, of course :) What wouyld you do ?

My default conan RQ would be simply RQ, with the magic rules replaced by the demon summoning from Stormbringer :)

Be a bit peeved as i had heard that the Conan RQ book had already been written. I appreciate that there are doubtless issues over the license, but if it has been written then "publish and be damned." Now as to what to do, yes Stormbringer demonology. Plus some careful spell conversions from the Conan rules and we are off and running!

yeah. Or just pick out some appropriate rune magic, stormbringer spells and Call of cthulhu magic and go from there :)

I mean, heck, most sorcerers tends to be wacky anyways, so using COC magic and sanity might not be a bad idea

I've been running Hyborian campaigns for a while with RQ-based rules. The first was fairly straight RQ2 but I've adapted the rules considerably for the 2nd campaign. On the question of magic, I have not allowed PCs to have any - magic is wierd and unknowable to them. I replaced Power with Presence, which generally gets checked when PCs are faced with magic or horrors out of the ordinary - my players have taken this fairly well, the Pict with low presence runs and hides without failing his roll!
As for adapting the rules in my 2nd campaign, I have divided skills into eight categories then allowed characters about half-a-dozen specialisations - if they don't have the specialisation then they roll on the default category. I felt this emulated Hyboria better where individuals seem to be competent in their field of expertise.

What!!!???, no RQ Conan? What is the source for this terrible news? Vincent already posted that he was in the process of writing the book - what happened?

No one will say, i suspect its to do with the licence. Would be nice to have an official coment though!

I haven't actually seen anyone rule out a Hyborian book for RQ. I think what has been ruled out is the Conan RPG converting entirely to RQ.

Or have I missed something?

The source of the info is Matt's statement in this post here, specifically the passage

There has been a lot of speculation about what other games can be converted to RuneQuest. However, one rumour I can squash right now is about Conan – it will not be joining the RuneQuest brand, but retaining its own system. On the other hand, development is about to begin on SpaceQuest, a set of science fiction rules based on RuneQuest, and a number of settings will be appearing to support this as well. Both Judge Dredd and Strontium Dogs have been mooted as possibilities but, as yet, nothing has been confirmed.

Rumour seems a little bit of an understatement as they once had a page for the book you could find by searching the site and one of the primary Conan writers said he had pretty much written the book, but hey, who is quibbling over language.

Issues with the Conan license could be one reason. Maybe with the Eternal Champion license they didn't want to release too many fantasy settings - at some point they will just start competing with eachother. Maybe it had something to do with all the negative clamor among the Conan fanbase.

Im not sure what issues there could be with the license, unless they are limited to one roleplaying game, or some such, which would be peculiar

If they started using two systems, they would have to either print material exclusive to either game system or dual stat books. My experiences with the dual game rule pairings of Legend of the Five Rings/Rokugan and Seventh Sea/Swashbuckling resulted in many, many unhappy customers, game material that was only usable in one or the other system and gross distortions of the game world to fit the ruleset.

Best to just stick with one system and have done with it.

They didnt need a lot of stuff though. Setting material is perfectly usable for both. Just give us one book (that according to rumour may or may not have been mostly finished anyways) and be done with it.

The way I see it, if you dont make the book, you wont sell it. If you make it, you'll sell it.

Why not sell it :)

Muddies the waters. Gets folks interested in a game-version that won't be supported - this always creates resentment.

Never underestimate the sense of entitlement of a gamer who somehow feels betrayed.

hehe, thats very true. If they were upfront from the beginning that it was going to be a single book thing, maybe. Worked for Green Ronin with Blue Rose (at least I think thats who wrote it)

Ah well. Could have been's and never was's

Yes, but Blue Rose was always supposed to be one book. This would b ea one-shot that is published while the regular Conan d20 series continues. Not quite the same case.

Speaking of Blue Rose, I really wish my friends Larry Dixon and Mercedes Lackey were given credit in that book.
