I am starting to aquire some ships for the early Jutland actions as well as what if scenarios with my USN 6th Squadron.

SMS Von der Tann[Note 1] was the first battlecruiser built for the German Kaiserliche Marine, as well as Germany's first major turbine-powered warship. At the time of her construction, Von der Tann was the fastest dreadnought-type warship afloat, capable of reaching speeds of more than 27 knots.[1] Built by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg,[2] Von der Tann was the workhorse of the High Seas Fleet Scouting Squadron.

Von der Tann was designed in response to the British Invincible class. While the German design had slightly lighter guns—28 cm (11 in),[Note 2] compared to the 30.5 cm (12 in) Mark X mounted on the British ships—Von der Tann was faster and significantly better-armoured. She set the precedent of German battlecruisers carrying much heavier armour than their British equivalents, albeit at the cost of smaller guns.

The ship participated in a number of fleet actions during the First World War, including the Battle of Jutland, where she destroyed the British battlecruiser HMS Indefatigable within minutes of the engagement. Von der Tann was hit several times by large-calibre shells, but the damage was quickly repaired and the ship returned to the fleet in two months.[3]

Following the end of the war in 1918, Von der Tann, along with most of the High Seas Fleet, was interned at Scapa Flow pending a decision by the Allies as to the fate of the fleet. The ship met her end when the fleet was scuttled in 1919 to prevent them falling into British hands. The wreck of Von der Tann was raised in 1930, and scrapped at Rosyth from 1931 to 1934.[4]

That's a funky turret arrangement. I assume she could only bring 6 guns to bear on either broadside?

The offset centre turrets on WWI ships could usually fire on the opposite broadside on a restricted arc. Certainly true of many of the early dreadnoughts.

Best part about these games is all the history you learn in the process.

I knew vey littel of the details on WWI actions before doing the research for new scenarios.

Nice. Are the turrets stuck on after painting to get such neat edges with the deck?

Correct...this is a GHQ model which requires some assembly. For this one in particular I did all the deck work before I put any of the superstructure on. I always mount the turrets last.

Ever tempted to paint your bases to match the sea in the background?

I currently have my bases slightly different colors for RJW and WWI. I also have some different darker background.

Erm, no. I was looking at the nice speckly sea surface that the ships are sitting on and, assuming it is a DIY surface, thought the same technique would look great on ship bases...

Just an idea. Don't get me wrong, they look great as they are!

Ah, no the background is just what felt looks like close up.

I am actually transitioning to Marine vinyl wich comes 54" wide and has a nice color blue. Ships slide on it much better.
