Slightly OT, but there was some chat recently about sinking ships in exercises. This might therefore be of interest.

Wow. I thought the Aegis ships were state of the art. Guess my info is hopelessly out of date!

What are they using now??

More advanced versions of Aegis, if u r in the US.

PAAMS if you are in the UK, France or Italy :)

I'm not sure exactly not much, thats for sure, but I understand that various bits and pieces that go into the system have been used in export designs, mainly from Fance (e.g. the A50 launcher which I think is also at sea on the Charles de Gaulle. And there's always the S1850 :)

Supposed to fit on the Type 45s, and I really hope for the RN's sake that they're keeping a lot of the performance secret, because the published figures make the actual missile look a pretty shabby choice beside even a late mark Sea Dart never mind SM2.

The later Ticonderogas have two vertical launch systems- Bunker Hill the first, wasn't she? The earlier ones have the same Aegis fit but magazine and rail type launchers.

I agree that 18 years seems quite young to be decomissioned and sunk no less. That being said, the Aegis combat system was designed to protect a carrier from a massive air raid of bombers, which doesn't seem as likely an occurance anymore. At least, not in the Atlantic.

It is gradually being morphed in to supporting missile defense as well. Should be in the fleet for quite a long time.

I know some launcher components have been tested on the CDG, but to my knowledge, which is fairly extensive, no major, or serious minor components of PAAMS are in service yet, in testing, but not in service.

Maybe so, although S1850 is generally quoted as a piece of the PAAMS system and its been in service for some time with the Dutch and German navies (admittedly its not a critical element of PAAMS but BAE Systems describe it as "central to the PAAMS system" (something of an overstatement I think) and I guess they'd have a half decent view, especially as SAMPSON is theirs :). IIRC Aster 15 ISD was supposed to be this year and has been test fired from CdG (anf the Saudi ships?). Wouldn't be surprised if it was late :)
