Silly question regarding the Apollo cruiser

Why does a one-piece small ship like the Apollo cost so much compared to the Marathon and others which are bigger or equal size yet require assembly? I really want some more Apollos, but they are just too expensive. Any good ideas for the justification of the cost?

Just curious

Chris

it's possible that the one piece ship uses more actual metal, or is more difficult to mold because of it's shape. but more likely mongoose estimated different amounts of demand for the two different models and the costs are based on that.

are the apollos that good? They only have two different weapons, they seem a bit point expensive for what they are. The book says there good at planetary bombardment, but i never need planet bombarders, or am i missing the point of them?

They are a very good support ship. The missiles are at 30" range in the forward arc which means you can generally concentrate fire without worrying too much about things getting out of the way. If you swap them over to Flash missiles you gain double damage, but lose Super AP for AP. The trick is to use it to snipe raid and lower targets so as to cause a general depreciation in the overall effectiveness of the enemy fleet. It will never go head to head with a main line ship like an Omega or a Primus, but as part of a larger force that includes a big brawler it can put in some really good hits while staying safely in the rear of the action.

It's very effective against ships without Interceptors as you get consistently good firepower, esp if you CAF, albeit with a lower damage potential than a beam. But hey, who can beat infinite damage potential?

I loaded one up with Flash Missiles, it was destroying or crippling one Skirmish Vree ship a turn. Obviously they're a little more fragile than Omegas or Marathons so one has to be a little more careful, but all in all they're quite respectable for their PL.
