Cosmic Mongoose
well having seen the minis in the flesh so to speak i am not impressed. the paint job is not as bad as it looks in the pictures admittedly but its still not very good. the minis are tiny though, perhaps they are 28mm but having been used to playing with Sci-Fi stuff of 30mm these things really look small and IMO are definately not worth £20 for 8 (or however many) and the pricing on these would even make the EE proud. even with the 25% discount i can get from my LGS i can say i will not be buying these, maybe at £10 for the squad i would consider it but i can get metal models for my ancients at only £8.50 for 8 and yes they may need painting but they are metal and far far cheaper (and the models look better).
its a shame cos it looked like it could have been a good game, will have to wait and see whats done with the SST:evo and fingers crossed its better.

However good luck to mongoose with this game, i do like your games, keep up the mostly good work and i hope this works out for you.

anyone else seen them up close? what you all think?

wow

3 questions

1 were they sample minis ?

and

2 where any available to buy ?

and

3 What shop ?

buy the way smaller is better in my opinion.

just been to my local traveling man in bristol, to see if thay had some.

but still they have no figs and they still have no idea what is and when if BF-evo will be released !!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

drives me nuts, if thats not bad enough they have stoped games nights !!!!!

BF-evo may have zero impact im britol :(

we realy need to eductate some of these distributers to educate the shops they distribute to.

samples, none available to buy.
from a gaming distance they may look ok, altho i can imagine losnig them amongst the terrain and forgetting some units far easier than you do in other games.

I got some samples in earlier this week. AFAIK these are first wave production minis. An M1A1 and a rifleman from each faction.

If the M1A1 is anything to go by, the tanks are pretty nicely done.

The figures do seem small, but it's an optical illusion. I measured one figure at dead on 30mm (not counting the base height). The bases are 22mm diameter instead of the 25mm most people are used to, which makes the figure seem smaller, as does the fact that they have an average human build, instead of the muscle-bound freaks found in a lot of miniatures games. At first glance I even thought they looked closer to 20mm, until I took the time to actually measure and compare with other minis.

Those minis in camo look to be done to a better standard than most players would bother with (bearing in mind here that forum regulars here a tendancy to be towards the upper levels of painting skill, so I don't expect for many people to agree with me on here). The main fault I can see is in the eyes (the USMC guy I have here looks the best of the bunch due to wearing sunglasses :) ) and facial detail in general.

For those "expert painters" who can do far better, I'd say they're still worth a look as 95% of the paint job is done for you, and all you have to do is a little bit of tweaking. They're certainly painted better than the soft plastic CMGs.

If I can get a decent photo of them I'll post it. Unfortunately my photography skills border on the non-existent so I won't risk posting a cruddy photo.

One thing I'd recommend is picking a colour and painting the base rims so you can see your minis on the table and hopefully tell apart from your opponent.

Great, suggestion on the painting the base,

I plan to use a differing color (sorry all, from the states, but never a yank), for each faction, and use vertical stripes to show leaders.

Now just to decide colors,

USMC Green Yellow or Gold Stripes

ETF Blue White Stripes

PLA Red Black Stripes

MEA Black with Sliver Stripes

These might work, any suggestions?

I was thinking about colour coding the bases for the weapons.

Red around the base for RPG / Rocket

Green - heavy machine gun / SAW etc

Blue - Leader / Commander

Yellow - Sniper etc.

Ok folks,

For demos, to teach folks the game, which ring painting sounds best,
by Forces
by Weapons

And please also say why you think one is better, and which colors you would use.

This is for my use to help in demos, not which is best for normal play, I like both, but I think only one would work, otherwise you would need a sheet showing all the marks.

Most of my stuff will be demoed alot, and helping folks get as much info off the fig will speed teaching.

I'll be sure to let them know I added the paint for teaching new players, and the figs do not come like that, sorta like those chess sets with the movment shown on the figs.

thanks for the help

by forces.

Unless you are running demos with ONLY 2 armies, then maybe by weapon type because you'll know teams easily.

I'd say by weapons. Given the different camo schemes you should be able to tell your guys apart from the other one's well enough, but picking out a light machine gun or NCO would be a challenge.

Both! Paint each base a certain color based on squad, then give them stripes of a color designating their weapons! :)

im gonan repaint the bases wirh some patches of static gras, to fit my games tables better, alternativly i may do them in urban to fit my urban tables !!!!

il see what table they play best on i guese.

I don't suppose anyone can tell me how they compare to WH40K Cadian Imperial Guards? Has the great GW imperium triumphed once again when it comes to quality models?

different kettle of fish

compare warhammer empire figs to AT-43 figs, the similarity is the same.

were they wave 1 or wave 2...it looks as though the wave 2's are a huge improvement for wave one. If they have improved that much, I can bite the bullet, so to speak, and skip the wave ones, or just buy a few as fillers...or maybe a second run of wave 1's will look as good as the 2's.

Everyone's going to have to make thir own decision. The AT-43 stuff looks good, no doubt. I'm more interested in modern(ultra?), so I'm going into this. AT-43 isn't providing EXACTLY what they promised either. IF I decide to go pure SF, I'd do AT-43 as I'm not wildly impressed with STT as a whole. My OPINION. But, I do remember telling a friend that SST would make a cool pre-paint game.

Irashaine1972,
Here take my wallet AND my bank account just phuleaze give me a pile of your barell-o-monkey junk!

Seriously amazes me. So if you like this stuff and want to get behind it so be it. Doesnt change the fact that the sculpts are just terrible made worse because the casting process is obviously not high standard. I con cede that the wave 2 pics are better painting than the wave ones but still not great. In all honesty I have no interest in the game anyway. But I DO collect SST and love the models. I have done thousands of GW models in my day(20 years worth) and have seen them evolve for along time and the SST stuff is in many cases just as good. I happen to think the exosuits are outstanding miniatures. This stuff is simply mass marketed mass produced instant gratification. MGP is simply trying to get a cut of the pre-painted craze. Sad. When the CCG craze began how many companies jumped on it and how many CCGs no longer exhist some taking the companies with them? More than I care to remember. So it will be with the mini market I imagine. Really good miniature game companies with a good line of figs have the potential to stay around for years and decades. MGP has/had a great line of miniatures and wargames with a small(compared to some) but dedicated following. Now they are dumping all of that for THIS???? I can buy so much great miniature gaming product for the money. While I dont care about this game anyway I DO love SST but this is the sign of whats to come and I am definetly NOT buying SST in this format. When this craze dies down and people lose interest in it because hobbywise it has no substance then where will they stand? Whats the long term here? Devoted gamers and hobbyists who will and regularly DO pay top dollar for models simply because they can participate in there hobby alone when they are not gaming or the quick fix pie in the sky? I mean lets be real here. Rakahm has both bases covered at this point. Their HUGE popular COnfrontation line (people were going crazy over these things from day one when they could only order directly from europe and had to wait 6+ months just to get their orders). And they have their pre-paint line now. Seems like the smarter decision. Oh well...............thats my opinion.
Great (Note Sarcasm), regurgitation of the "Hobby" Argument of the EE. . . .

Unfortunately not a valid argument from many peoples' viewpoint.

I am not currently interested in BF Evo, however Rackham has pretty but pain in the butt to assemble figs.

Pre painted or not is a very personal choice for each Game Playing Consumer.

Your decision not to purchase is your choice.

To equate MGPs products with Barrel 'O Mankeys is a poor metaphor, and inaccurate as well.

I can paint better, yes but many players cannot, or do not, or will not paint any better than the prepaints of either wave.

I have played mostly far worse painted figures and armies over many years, over 80 per cent of the armies I have played against at local stores and even in tournaments, are of far lesser quality.

For this reason (over 40 years of game playing, and as an ex-Outrider for GW {16 years}) and many others: I feel your criticism is overly harsh and inaccurate. Casting process?? (Injection molded plastic, not cast metal or plastic)

As I said before, it is completely your right to purchase what you wish to purchase.

I myself am currently concentrating on WW II historicals via Flames of War.

Enjoy whatever you choose to do. :) :)

I could go through and refute your statements line by line, but too many on this forum become offended by the application of logic to illogical statements and I do not choose to start an argument over figures that I haven't seen more than one or two of.

Hobby, Hobby, Hobby      sic semper EE

As the pix I've seen haven't made me all hot-and-bothered-like to purchase BF:E-stuff (and in fact have instilled in me a certain forebonding as to the quality of the upcoming SST:E stuff as well) I would also like to hear more testimonies from Johnny Q. Public (as opposed to retailers and the like who, let's face it, do have a bit of a vested interest in seeing this product sell).

With minimum ranting if you please

I find the lack of grammar in this topic... disturbing...

I might as well, IF I could spell or get grammer correct, but I do so poorly and adding my bad typing to the mix, just means I have no room to call otheres on that which they do.
