Runestones...still here?

Seeing as Loz is quick to answer questions, I'm curious if these are still in the core magic system for RQII, if they have been excised, made optional, or are otherwise still lingering.

Although I ran a campaign in which my players quite enjoyed collecting the damned things, I myself found their presence annoying, and would have preferred a default magic system that did not include them. Alternatively, they would have been fine as an additional gimick, but not the hinge on which rune magic operated as such (as stones, anyway).

Just curious!
