Mongoose
Dear fellow Runequest players,

I’ve been playing Runequest since edition 3 and the first thing I would like to do is to thank Mongoose and the greater game community for having kept such a fantastic game alive. Runequest is more than alive, it is striving.

Now, I do not know if I am alone but I have the distinct feeling we could be in for another revised edition in the not too distant future. This is pure speculation from my part and entirely based on discussions that have popped up on this board.

With this in mind, I have come up with a quick pdf document that I call Runequest Redux . It is a compendium of all the house rules I have come up with over the years. This is by no mean a complete game system but it is clearly a good step in that direction.

Compared to a normal game of MRQ, here are the key differences:
  • Remains entirely compatible with the MRQ edition
  • Characters are allowed to dig deep in their reserves to temporarily gain an edge (spend MP to boost skills)
  • Success level and automatic successes depending on your level of competency (“Yes You can!”)
  • Group dice pools
  • Fixed 3 actions per round combat systems with reactions (dodging/parry/free attacks) costing actions
  • Combat maneuvers because there is much more to combat than swinging a sword.
Example: Push back
“You use the length of your weapon not only to deal grievous bodily harm but also to repulse your attackers”

As an Action or during a free attack, the warrior makes an opposed weapon attack skill test as normal with a -20% penalty. If successful, he deals damage as normal but on top of this the target is automatically knocked back 1m for every 5 points of damages suffered (i.e. after taking into account armor).

You can find the pdf here.

I hope you will find some of those ideas interesting and please feel free to comment. I really would like to know with what you agree/disagree with and what you would do differently and why?

Let’s make the next edition the best ever

PS. If someone more IT oriented than me could add Runequest Redux to the MRQ wiki, that would greatly be appreciated.

I've loaded it up for you, but it's relatively easy to amend when you've updated it.

btw, If this is meant as a number of changes, I find it's generally more convenient on a wiki to have the rules or amendments in wiki form rather than as a pdf, though. If it is meant as the start of a derivative system, then it might be a good idea to be positive in the text about that (but keep it as a pdf!). :D
