RuneQuest 6 Pre-view

Hmm... Never thought of it as a deodand (Vance was always sketchy on their appearance) and the illo is really just the panther species of the race.

Thanks for the kind words though!

It comes in very handy. I been planning on populating the wild places of my next setting with various chimera, including deodands and other Vance-isms.

Interesting. Some general thoughts:

The layout is very clean and attractive.

Female warriors in sensible armour!. One thing that has always bothered me a bit about Mongoose (right back to the d20 era) is their tendency towards cheesecake art. It's not as pronounced in Legend as it was in some of their earlier works, but it's nice to see women in reasonable armour.

The artwork seems to emphasize a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age setting. This is probably due to the influence of Glorantha, but it has the advantage of distinguishing the game from "generic D&D fantasy". A nice touch.

The way that Passions are handled reminds me of Allegiences from d20 Modern. I was expecting them to be more like personality traits from Pendragon. I'm a bit surprised that they don't seem to have a rating indicating the strength of the passion as I can imagine that you could invoke or compel them like Aspects in FATE. However, we haven't seen the full rules yet, so there may still be some surprises in this area.

The armour table is cool. I've been working on an expanded armour table for Legend and the values in that table are almost identical to the ones that I came up with. I don't like the ban on layering armour point though - my solution was to allow players to wear a single layer of flexible armour under a layer of rigid armour, but to increase the ENC of the combination by 1.

The description of spirit magic is vastly improved. Excellent work!

I'm not sure about the Panthotaur - it's giving me bad Thundercat flashbacks ;)

I'll definitely be picking up this book as soon as it comes out...

They're a development of the Passions systems created for Elric and Wraith Recon. You haven't seen the full rules in the preview, but there are values associated with each one.

I'm unfamiliar with the Passions rules. Can places and things be associated with Passions?

Are there any plans to produce alternate magic systems...such as free-form or effect-based magic?

I kind of figured they were based on the Passions system from Elric. I'm looking forward to see what you do in this area - the preview only gives us a teaser. I want the full product now, dammit!

POW gives luck points? I'm intrigued by this.

Sounds like the idea we had. POW being your "Destiny score" or something like that.

I will definately be buying the product, simply from inspiration - as I will likely never play in Glorantha.

I do find it a bit sad though that the franchise is fragmented, but luckily most things will be useable across RQ6 and Legend.

I don't think RQ6 is inherently Glorantha Based, from the preview it seems that the sample character lives in a world inspired by ancient greece.

Correct. RQ6 is not tied to Glorantha.

I don't look at it like that. As a fan, I'm happy to use the bits that I like from Legend, RQ 6, BRP, OpenQuest, and Renaissance. These games aren't very rules-heavy and it's easy to swap in and out different components to suit your own taste. At your own table, you can use different elements of the system any way that you like.

Obviously, if you are a third-party publisher, things are a bit more complex as you need to be careful about licensing agreements. However, Legend, OpenQuest, and Renaissance have all been released under the OGL. This gives you access to the basic d100 system if that's all that you want. And if you want full compatibility with BRP or Runequest, the companies involved seem quite approachable. Chaosium allows numerous licensees to use their IP and Design Mechanism have indicated that they will support some kind of generous licensing scheme for RQ 6 - the details are still a bit vague, but will presumably become clear close to the release date.

Heck, Loz is even doing work for Chaosium with their upcoming Advanced Sorcery sourcebook, so there is a fair bit of crossover within the d100 community.

Yes. Anything can be associated with a Passion: Loyalty to City; Love Home; Hate School.

No, not at present. Chaosium's 'Advanced Sorcery' for BRP Magic World contains the freeform magic system I developed for 'The Unknown East' many, many years ago. I'd recommend taking a look at it: its 100% compatible with RQ6 and Legend.

I didn't phrase that right. Can things and places have Passions? For instance the Marsten House might have Loyalty to Evil; Love Murder; Hate the Living. Or something like that.

Excellent. That, Magic World and Enlightened Magic happen to be on my wishlist. :)

That, I think, is entirely up to you...

It's a neat idea if you want to introduce the concept of genius loci into your game. I like the concept that certain places might have an emotional resonance that can be help or harm visitors, depending upon the situation. In addition to haunted houses, this would work well with the fantasy trope of places that are attuned to a particular faction or species - the woods of Lothlorien spring to mind.

It also plays well with the notion that landscapes in fantasy often have a symbolic or psychological dimension that transcends mere allegory. The works of J.G. Ballard provide numerous examples of this, but many other authors (Ursula Le Guin, Michael Moorcock, China Mieville, et al) embody similar concepts.

I noticed High Rise is back in print. Finally, I've been wanting to pick that up for ages.:)

It's a decent book that was an influence on the world of Judge Dredd amongst other things. J.G. Ballard isn't really a fantasy author, but some of his early works (such as the Drowned World and The Drought) contain awesome descriptions of imaginary landscapes that can be used as inspiration for fantasy settings. My own homebrew setting includes an enchanted forest that was transformed into solid crystal by a magical disaster - an obvious borrowing from The Crystal World. (Except my version has strange crystalline creatures such as giant beetles and dragonflies that want to eat living creatures!)

Once included a cult of symphorophiles in my Atlantis game. They'd hang around circuses all day ostensibly to divine future events from the details of chariot accidents. The top man in the cult was obsessed with being in a head-on collision with Cleopatra.
