Rules Clarification: Aliens of Charted Space 2 (Droyne Question)

On page 192 regarding Continuation, it states "If it is passed, there is no additional effect. If failed, the Droyne is ejected from the Oytrip."

On page 203 under mishap #6 it states; "...Your rank is reduced by –1. If this takes it below zero you are ejected from the Oytrip. Make a continuation check."

What is the Continuation check for exactly in the case mentioned in this mishap? I thought it was a check just to see if you are ejected from the Oytrip, but the result of the Mishap specifically mandates such an ejection regardless going by the way it is worded.

Is the Continuation check a "saving roll" to avoid the ejection?
Are you ejected, but if you make your Continuation roll, you can "continue" in character creation as if you joined a new Oytrip? (rank still at -1)
Was this entry just worded incorrectly?

Briefly put, the continuation check mitigates the effect of ejection. It explains that Droynes usually commit suicide if they are rejected but assumes PCs begin adventuring at this point in their career.
In context of the Mishap, assume it nullifies the attempt of ejection. But what to do about the rank being non-positive? Because the game mechanic does not allow for a negative rank upon a continuation success, just reset the Rank to zero, and carry on.
