RQ4

I think there was dice rolling.

And you hit things. With things. Yea, I'm pretty sure that was in there.

Anyone who got a word or pdf version of the unpublished RQ4? Would be nice to see if it had some good ideas for houseruling.

I think I've got a copy somewhere I'll have a look. I wasn't hugely impressed, it seemed largely aimed at "Power-Gamers" &
"Munchkins". It's a huge file though and to be fair to the guys who produced they did put a lot of time into it. Getting it to you might be a challenge though I seem to remember it's about 25 meg and my mail account isn't that forgiving :?

I heard the rules got a bit more complicated, and that RQ3 runs better. But reading through the summary on the Lokarnos page, it looks like it contains some good bits too, and I'm sure it can give some good ideas worth houseruling.

25 meg is pretty big, though. New yahoo takes only up to 20 meg... :(

Have you tried Ravage yet? he hasn't posted for a little while but PM him.

Is this the Oliver Jankovics (sp?) et al. playtest draft? I always wondered what that looked like.

Any chance of a copy?

The summary of the rules is here.

It was very rules heavy, for example each skill had a 'difficulty' rating, affecting your progression rate. Character generation was very complex and formulaic with a points buy system. Spirit combat was as per RQ3, but you did Magic Point 'damage' based on you're POW instead of a flat 1D3.

Some of the 'feel' of it was very good, and it was a very tight, well integrated and consistent system, but it just wasn't worth the complexity. One RQ3 group I was in adopted a few things, like the spirit combat.

I don't currently have a copy, I don't think. Maybe burried in a box of old RPG stuff in the attic.

It would be unfair to say that it pandered to munchkinism or power gaming. Rather, it suffered from bloat. Classic case of trying to make rules that looked good on paper but were a bear to play because the game got too detailed. The summary makes RQ4:AiG seem far more coherent than it actually is.

I think MRQ takes a more viable route albeit the printed version seems more like MRQ beta and it seems to lack the deep thinking that you need to make a complex game properly simple.

I'm not responsible for this file, i found it on the net :) But... your welcome to it as I understand the license for RuneQuest no longer stands with Avalon Hill and has lapsed and so therefore this exists as an unpublished curiosity. Sorry, just stating facts to cover my backside and dont want to cause anyone a grudge, and equally this is Mongoose's forums and dont want them getting upset with me either.

If you want a link to the file then PM me :)

(Still haunting the list but not had chance ot post recently ;p)

PS as a sidenote, the colour tarot cards are done by a player in my campaign who was shocked when I told him that the composer of this PDF decided made good chapter breaks. Interestingly my long term pc, Havius appears holding gold coins for a cups set of cards :)

I've got three files for RQ4:
Runequest IV (Word doc, 107 pages, 367kb) - seems partially complete with notes added as to other changes to be made to the RQ3 rules.
RQ: Adventures in Glorantha summary (Word doc, 9 pages, 72kb)
RQ4 Playtest Discussion (Word doc, 298 pages!, 1.15mb)

Just too many rules for me: to be honest I don't think I ever finished reading them.
If anyone is interested in a copy, pm me (I've just zipped them to a 390kb .zip file).

Cheers

Dave

Wow! :o

35.81 MB, 224 pages!

It looks really comprehensive. A lot of work put into that manuscript. Every page is packed with info.

(if only Mongoose could have done something like that when producing MRQ...)

And there is no security on the pdf file! I can add and delete, houseruling it as I go! This will be very nice for my 3rd Age group. :D

Just read through RQ4 (Thanks Ravage!) and I'm well impressed even without being a Gloranthaphile. The rules differentiation seems a weee bit fiddly but only at the generation stage where, with the culture lists, most of the work's done for you anyway. The slight weapon/armour downgrading looks well balanced (No precise hit!) and the stat based rolls are well explained. Level of cultural detail and integration with basic setting background is excellent (My campaign was lower magic but the starting spells here seem right for the flavour of much of the published 3rd Age stuff). My heart goes out to the poor bods who did all this good work and never saw it in print...

PDF security is a joke anyway, if there is no password to open the document (or you know the pw) you can just switch off the password to edit the document. So anyone who can view a pdf can edit it, too.
