RQ movies ?

Just watched Princess Mononoke, which seems to have a lot of Gloranthan feeling to it. 13th Warrior is a movie that just screams Runequest (even if its not particularly Glorantha, maybe).

Whats yours ?

I saw a film a few years ago (actually, a lot of years ago) that had an elf in it that I swear cast multimissile. He's firing his bow at someone, and the film shows him firing 4 or 5 arrows, one after the other, really quickly. Anyone know what the film is? Sorry, not much to go on...

I think the film you are referring to is "Hawk, the Slayer"

Strongly agreed on Mononoke-RQ parallels. Incredible film, too. Lots of anime films have that RQ ring to them; can't think of specifics offhand.

Probably too obvious but Conan The Barbarian always felt to me to have an RQ feel too, as did a lot of Harryhausen films (Clash O' Titans, Jason & Argonauts).

And there is, somewhere, a script for a genuine Runequest: The Movie which, presumably, was Glorantha based.

The new Frank Miller Spartans film, 400, looks like it has a distinctly RQ-ish flavour to it. From the trailers, at least.

13th Warrior: yep, Orlanthi vs Hsunchen cannibal types.

Haven't seen Princess Mononoke, but it sounds great.

I thought it was 300 Spartans at the battle of Thermopylae.

You have named two of Greg's favorite movies. :) The Harryhausen films do have a RQ feel too. Especially Jason and the Argnauts. Me, I'm a fan of the new ROME series from HBO/BBC...

Jeff - who is clearly not Sparticus

I think the duels in "Troy" are somewhat reminiscent of attacks and parries of RQ and even of dodging.
But perhaps "Braveheart" depicts the best how Sartarites look like and fight.

It was, and the movie is called "300". :)

And personally, most 80's fantasy/Barbarian films can be very MRQ, in my opinion.

I was going to nominate Troy. Troy and 13th Warrior are both very strong RQ games.

I still haven't had a chance to finish my Runequest Modern project, but when I was looking for a good game system for 70s era TV shows, and read the MRQ rules, they looked like a pretty good match -- even better than Call of Cthulhu.

Especially for campaigns where the PCs are not obviously overclassed. You could run Runequest superheroes like Steve Austin or Jamie Summers.

D20 Modern is designed for modern "gun fu" films. Perhaps it would also be good for a modern show like Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- where Buffy is so uber-powerful that nobody except for a master vampire or other such monster can touch her. But for a 70s show like Six Million Dollar Man, where Steve Austin has to worry that any bullet can kill him, Runequest seems like a more natural fit.

Oh, what's an extra 100 between friends?

Check out the Korean movie Musa: the Warrior.

A small band of Korean diplomats and soldiers on a failed mission to China find themselves stuck between the Chinese and Mongolians at war, and try to rescue a Chinese princess from the Mongolians to redeem themselves with the emperor. However the Mongolians aren't about to give her up so easily.

Not a standard martial arts movie (where the plot is often a device to string the fights together), this is a complex tale of the relationships between the different leads and the combat is very reminiscent of Gladiator.

All in all, very RQ. Highly recommended.

Cheers

Rob Roy. I'll swear that the cave that the highlanders meet in after searching for McDonald is the same one that is on the RQ2 Cults of Terror cover!

Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des loups)

- a french-language, period, martial arts, monster, romance movie. RQ with black-powder arms. Brilliant.
