romulans or klingons. Now that's the question

Thinking about buying either klingons or romulans to oppose against feds. But which is the question!

Klingons:

a) damn easy to recognize. Romulan's aren't that bad(compared to say gorns or kzinzi's who non-serious fans don't neccessarily know. *I* went like "gorns? Gorns who?" and I have seen the TOS couple times...)
b) very quick learning curve for beginners. Super agility + front shields + long range guns without gimmicks(unlike plasma's)=beginners should find them easier to play.
c) Grey or green, either way notably different fleet lookwise to feds.
d) already available

Romulans:

a) markedly different playing style with cloaking and 3 types of ships(heavy weighters with glass jaws, klingon hulls and then very good but pricey hawk series).
b) the underside bird patterns would be nice to try to paint
c) plasma's.
d) cloaks
e) They have definite appeal to me
f) But is the different playing style too hard for newbie's to swallow? (especially keeping in mind I plan to introduce the game to my soon 11yo little brother)
g) what's the status on fleet box? Available in european stores already?
h) they tempt me to get the clear resin versions but that would get ridiculously pricey!

Argh! Decisions decisions!

(of course knowing myself I prolly end up getting all 3 eventually...)

We found this weekend demoing games at Games Expo UK that even with Romulan's the totally new players got the hang of the Romulans very quickly.

Though if you want instant recognised ships which will get a completely new player into the game I would go with the Feds or Klingons. These would be good entry level fleets for a complete CTA Newbie.

Well feds are already given. I'm just looking for something to shoot down with them ;)

What I have found is that when talking about marginal games it's usually good idea to have 2 sides so you can demo it to people who don't have figs :D And I have suspicion Finland doesn't have that many players of this(more of GW/PP/flames of war around here).

...Of course next Matthew comes in and tells that there's been hundreds of people from Finland ordering miniatures proving above statement false

(but certainly have seen zero discussion in Finnish forums about this game...So if there's players it's seriously underground game)

But ok. If they aren't that difficult to pick up there's that. Leaves the availability and yet another white fleet.

Remember that if you get Klingons, several of your ships can also be used as Romulans. You don't even need to repaint them - the ones in The Enterprise Incident had their original Klingon markings. :)

True that.

But in the end I opted for romulans(yeh. much good the thread did! Sorry!) coupled with klingon squadron box(3 ships to be used with romulans including the dreadnought! which was primary reason) plus 2 ships to be used for future klingon's. Figured might just as well get that box now that combined total gave me 10% discount already. Ordering dread individually made no sense either with the pricing structure. About the same with squadron box anyway with extra's for future. I'm sure I can find use for the D7 and C7. Maybe I'm just being naive but I think the D7 is pretty damn good ship even without 20 shield of D5. Yes it's not that good at sniping but line the thing properly within 12" and 9 phaser dice's. That's sweet!

(FD7 is drooling choise too. Fast and looking how D7 and FD7 are knife fighters rather than snipers 1=1 swapping of disruptors to ph1's is a steal!)

edit: Noticed errata changed D7 rather lot. No more 6 dice of ph2 to straight ahead then...Not sure I like D7 anymore. 3 ph1 + 4 ph2 to port or starboard but then no disruptor's. Or 3+2 with disruptors. Notably less firing than book version. Bummer. Why nerf the D7 :-<

Now just wait for them to arrive. And then start practicing on freehand painting!

I think I would go with Klingons. I've got Klingons and Feds, and they are the most easily recognizable Empires to someone just walking up to a game and looking.

I plan to run plenty of demos and some games at conventions, and my main to go fleets are Klingon and Federation.

You can use the D7 as the KRC command cruiser. The only ship in the Klingon squadron box you cannot use with Romulans at the moment is the C7 battlecruiser, and I would put money on that being in the next supplement. The KRC can still put 5 phaser-1s on the centreline, and has 14 dice of plasma (2 plasma Ds, which can also be used as anti drones -see the errata).

You've got the ships to still try both out. Have fun.

The D7C works nicely as a command ship with an all-agile fleet. 5 Ph-1 FPS arc plus some rear support plus the command bonus is quite useful.

Do what I did get both. With one Klingon Fleet box and a Romulan Squadron box you have enough ships for 2000 point battles for each when playing against Feds if you share models between the Klingons and Romulans.

I've got both simply because I can't count on others in my area to build fleets so if I want lots of options to game, I have to do them myself.

Get all three!

that way I can demo FvK - FvR - or even KvR!

Prolly end up eventually doing just that :D

Compulsive obsessive? Me? You must be kidding! ;)

(Mckinstry's point also is very much valid here)

There. Fed+romulan fleet boxes + klingon squadron box on it's way. Shop claims ETA is 2 weeks. Mongoose! Make damned sure there's those coming to Finland ASAP ;)

Think this is first big purchase from Finnish LGS(well the L part is bit of exaggeration. 2 hour drive to nearest anyway) in like 6 years. But this time they actually COULD provide it cheapest. euro-pound exchange ratio has worsened + no store with free shipping in UK sells these that I could find.

Well. I'm not against buying from local game stores provided price/quality is best :) And this time it was.

i think my closest stockist is Mongoose, which is a 3 hour drive, so well done lol.

Well. I went for broke and with price raise in the horizon ordered the klingon's as well. OOOOOOUCH! Got tad expensive but I have calculated that I have enough money collected already that I should get enough money for my planned japan trip saved so I can afford bit of luxus now.

But now going to have to freeze miniature purchaces again.

...But then again with 53 ships to paint it's not like I really need more miniatures to paint quickly...

okay Mongoose: You better NOT to release anything I would be dying for anytime soon ;)

(next thing I know there comes news of something big happening in B5 universum and Mongoose renews the licence...That would truly be bankrupt time!)
