rolling for defense

i like the idea of rolling for defense. i was aware that that a defense of ten is like taking ten a defense roll. you can't do this on an attack so i argued this to the rest of the group and we decided to keep it optional like in 3.5 D20 rules. we have it that at the beginning of your turn you can declare you are rolling for defense ONLY if you also declare your actions for this turn prior to the roll. then you take your actions for the turn, roll for D, and this new number lasts till your next turn. npc's do this as well. nobody minds the added seconds this may take.

anyone else roll for defense ever?

that's pretty cool supp. i never thought of the concept of a crit or fumble for a defense roll. i went to your other post. i have to look over the warriors companion again (one of the other guys has it) but i think i may bring this up next game.

Yep, the way I'm playing it, a natural 1 or a natural 20 has an effect on both the attack roll and the defense roll.

Attack Throw
Natural 20 (or other crit number) = Critical Thread per normal rules.

Natural 1 = Auto Miss (which can happen because the defense can roll low too).

Defense Throw
Natural 20 = Auto Dodge or Block (This is the opposite of rolling a natch 1 on the attack throw).

Natural 1 = Use Permanent Damage Chart (Because your defense was so crappy, you probably just got nailed).
