Return to Apple Lane

So the kids wanted to have a go at this RuneQuest thing that dad's into. So to do some thing simple to get them going and save me a lot of work I dragged out Apple Lane (RQ3) and started running it for them...and they are having a blast. We are in the middle of Gringle's Pawnshop fight, two baboons down, two surrendered. looks like everything is going rather well. But the cliffhanger for last night's session was the centaur bandit, biglaugh bigclub, bursting into the room. Until which point they had no idea they were facing more than just a gang of baboons - and the PCs quickly making a "tactical exit" through the door behind them.

And I was reminded how well structured and scripted this little scenario is. And a great intro to combat and magic. OK, so I am rather skating over what the Uleria temple in the middle of the village is for...

I have run this a few times over the years, but its most recent outing was at the start of the current campaign, which has now been going for over 2 years. Several new RQ players and they took to the village like veterans. Actually started with 'Rumble at the Tin Inn' from White Dwarf, recast the RQ2 strats into MRQ and they loved it.
Apple Lane has the benefit of a well-thought out set of scenarios and the cave bash even resulted in one of the characters having an adoring audience of Newtlings whenever he is near inland water of any kind. Loads of ways to give hooks and it provided a base of operations till the group were ordered into their specialist area as diplomatic liaison to the Durulz!
Each time I open the booklet it brings back loads of enjoyable memories, anyone who has a beginning bronze/iron age campaign with new players ought to consider this.
