Quick Rules question

The rules say that each turn a unit gets two actions. In order to set a machinegun up for firing, it says that the squad has to take a Ready action to go prone, setup bipods, etc.

Now, does this mean that the entire rest of the squad is out of commission for that action or can they do a shoot (or other) action while the gunners are setting up?

It means exactly that!

But before you get all upset, remember that that is why you can split the squad up by its fireteams, usually meaning that only an additional model or two get to admire their buddy the machinegunner setting up while the rest of the squad can move out or give fire...

And since the separation happens at the beginning of the turn (or Activation of the unit?), this is no problem unless you need to keep your units together due to loads of firepower pointed in their way (thus easier to avoid suppression).

hope that helps...

I expect the rulebook will allow the Gunner to just take the Ready action while the rest of his team can shoot or the "must do the same" rule will only apply to models in the team with the same weapons or something like that. I doubt they will keep such an odd rule in the advance game.

In SST this rule existed for M.I support weapons but (if memory serves, it's been months since i've played it now) the other fireteam members with auto weapons could re-roll any misses when they got to fire to simulate the careful cover zone they'd set up while the gunner gets sorted and that these were called shots after the ready action. This was ok because it was sweetner, particulaly if you were having a bad dice day.

Yep, I suspect we'll see something that makes the ready action of other models

For me, it's become standard practice to move my PLA fireteams together into position. Then when my MG is where I want it, I break them off into a fireteam and have them ready while my infantry advance.

Hmm... makes sense I suppose, especially if the other troops get a "dug in" bonus perhaps. I was just remembering fireteam training where while the Gunner was setting up, the riflemen were laying down cover fire.

What 127th Angry Angels said. The MG team spends the first action setting up while the squad mates spend it readying (i.e. scanning for ambushers). On the second action the MG team can fire and the squad mates fire with rerolls.
