Question about Empire Special Traits

Probably to avoid the GW 'every army list has something that breaks or modifies the basic rules of the game' syndrome.

Some races have special technologies, some of which are dealt with at the beginning of the fleet list and some of which are dealt with in the main rules (ie cloaks) depending on how complex the rules are. Double forward shields, or drone racks can switch to ADDs are short and sweet. Cloaks, Tholian Web, etc need decent sized explanations.

A number do, as has been mentioned Klink shieds, Rom cloaks, Fed combined Drone racks, Gorn awesomeness

There isn't really a need for the whole we are klingon and all klingon are born warriors so we get X, the Federation are technologicaly more advanced and so get Y and the Gorn are so fearsome in battle they get Z.

I know Matt is a Games Workshop player (he also does Traveller and ACTA-SF so I'll let him off the GW stuff  ) but I hope he doesn't bring in anything like that. Its a complete pain to balance against everyone else, and leads to munchkingdom (see GW).

The fleets are the game, the ships are nicely seperate enough and have enough Empire tstyle to be differant to play.

May be some empire specific captains powers but to be honest I don't think the game needs "Racial Abilities".

Let's not start holding playing GW games against people.

Racial traits can get a bit silly and different items of technology and how weapons are distributed and interact etc is a better way of going it. The wide arcs on Gorn plasma weapons and large numbers of single phaser batteries represents their ship building style and a racial trait isn't required. I wouldn't start complaining about it as their previous racial trait seemed to be lumbering.

Though there is certainly space for Legendary Captains rules. Hmmm.

Just to point out that it works perfectly well in B5 ACTA.

But SF races are so similar in their technologies that it is unlikely to happen in ACTA SF.

It's something I might expect to see more of the further out into the broader Star Fleet Universe the game ends up going; the likes of the Andromedans, or soem of the more exotic space navies in more distant settings, would likely require their own traits in order to fairly represent how each varies in their own way from the more "mundane" SFU empires.
