question about critical hits

sorry i am a bit confused about the way you move up the table for critical hit. Let me explain.

Let's say you get a crit on impulse engines with a damaging 2 weapon. you apply both the effects of crit 1 and crit 2. fine.

now you get a 2nd crit on impulse engines with a damaging 2 weapon. you apply the effects of crit 3 and 4. do you ALSO apply again the effects of crit 1 and 2.

Similar idea say you are currently on diithium chamber crit 2 currently. then the enemy fire a barrage of single point damage weapons at you. 2 get criticals and they are both on the dilithium chamber, so hits came from different dice but from same enemy in same activation.

In total this pushes you from crit 2 to crit 4, BUT how many crates do you apply to get there? Reading the rules strictly I would say this is what append.....

1st hit gives you crits 3,2, and 1
2nd hit gives you crits 4,3,2,1

this would lead to a total of 9 extra damage being taken plus lose all shields and 3 random traits and a marine

this seems a bit harsh and i am not at all sure that is what was intended. Can someone clarify please?

As i remember from starfleet battles where the crit table idea seems to have been taken from once a crit had been taken it was never applied again..... Totally different to what i have explained above. I suspect that is what was really intended....

As I understand it, you don't apply it again.

As in your example, you get two Devastating +1 hits. First hits impulse engines. It reduces the speed to a maximum of 8, and scores 0 (first level) + 1 (second level) extra damage. Then the next also hits impulse engines. You score two more points of damage, increase the Crew critical score by 1, and note that it is Escalating because of fires. Then for the fourth critical, you score 3 points of damage extra and the ship is adrift.

That is what the rules say. The bolded part just means that if you, say, go from a critical score of Impulse Drive 4 (ship adrift) to 5 (+1 to dilithium chamber critical score) your ship doesn't stop being adrift. All effects and damage up to and including the critical score apply, but only once. It also is there to address what happens if you "skip" a critical score level due to a Devastating weapon hit.

Critical hit effects remain in play - for example adrift.

The only way you apply the effects of a critical hit twice is to repair it, then take it over again.
