Product Review - GW Water Effects
Cost: £12 RRP
Size 237ml
Purchased from: Oracle Games (at discount)
I purchased this product to sculpt some water effect bases for 1/3000 Navwar ships. I've taken a picture of the results.
I think the major problem with the product is that GW have confused scenic water (ie a clear resin used as water in modelling, which is what they have produced) and water effects (which is not free flowing and is used for sculpting water detail like waves, ripples, waterfalls etc).
GW have produced scenic water, and while my Eldar will now be fighting in a ruined city that is also very wet, it is not suitable for anything but making pools of water.

Woodland Scenics Water Effect
Cost £10.50 RRP
Size: 236.6ml
Purchased from: Ian Allen Bookshop, Birmingham (at RRP)
I purchased this product after the poor results from the GW water effect. It is cheaper in terms of RRP. and is stocked right next to a larger bottle of scenic water (which is essentially the product GW has produced).
This product is satisfyingly thick, is sculptable, and was shaped first with a pin and then the waves were created with an old and scraggly brush. Step 1 shows the application of the water effect to the base, step 2 shows it having been shaped with a dressmaking pin, and step 3 shows the bases after the wave effects have been added.

Overall I am very satisfied with this product, it does exactly what I require and comes in a large enough amount I won't run out for months.
One thing I found with both products was that drying time could be decreased from about 24 hours (as stated on the bottles) to 24 minutes, by placing the ships next to a fan heater. You can tell when the resin is dry, as it becomes transparent when dry.
I'll post further when I have step by step painting pics (undercoat is drying now)
