Product Review - GW Water Effects

Cost: £12 RRP
Size 237ml
Purchased from: Oracle Games (at discount)

I purchased this product to sculpt some water effect bases for 1/3000 Navwar ships. I've taken a picture of the results.
I think the major problem with the product is that GW have confused scenic water (ie a clear resin used as water in modelling, which is what they have produced) and water effects (which is not free flowing and is used for sculpting water detail like waves, ripples, waterfalls etc).
GW have produced scenic water, and while my Eldar will now be fighting in a ruined city that is also very wet, it is not suitable for anything but making pools of water.

Woodland Scenics Water Effect

Cost £10.50 RRP
Size: 236.6ml
Purchased from: Ian Allen Bookshop, Birmingham (at RRP)

I purchased this product after the poor results from the GW water effect. It is cheaper in terms of RRP. and is stocked right next to a larger bottle of scenic water (which is essentially the product GW has produced).
This product is satisfyingly thick, is sculptable, and was shaped first with a pin and then the waves were created with an old and scraggly brush. Step 1 shows the application of the water effect to the base, step 2 shows it having been shaped with a dressmaking pin, and step 3 shows the bases after the wave effects have been added.

Overall I am very satisfied with this product, it does exactly what I require and comes in a large enough amount I won't run out for months.

One thing I found with both products was that drying time could be decreased from about 24 hours (as stated on the bottles) to 24 minutes, by placing the ships next to a fan heater. You can tell when the resin is dry, as it becomes transparent when dry.

I'll post further when I have step by step painting pics (undercoat is drying now)

Not all broadband is created equal. Good pictures by the way.

I really like Woodland scenics product line, I used several of their rock molds, modeling flock, earth tones, scenic cement, shakers, etc...if there's one thing this model railroad hobby copany can do well, its make terrain!

You might want to consider bringing the size of the pics down a bit, they slow down even a broadband connection....

I cannot agree more here!
:!:
My DSL account can handle it, but I am soo tired of scrolling to the left or right - or to look at blurry pics, just because some does not know how to resize or take pictures...
Sorry for being a bit rude, but it is these small sloppy things that are big inconvenience for a lot of people....

I'd agree with that, I don't care about the time it takes - 10 seconds instead of 5 is irrelevant, I was on dialup until last year. But having to scroll over to read every line is tedious. I'm glad I'm not on a laptop...

OK, I'm trying to work out how to resize. Anyone have any hints as to where I can find a program to do this? Paint doesn't appear to like doing it, but I'm still trying to work it out.

Yeah, I know the pics are big.

If you use imageshack to host your pictures, there is a feature to resize them when you upload. Otherwise, any decent paint program can do it easily. MS Paint is not a decent paint program.

Its fine on my 19" widescreen. 1440x900 4tw ;)

If you use imageshack to host your pictures

People will be forced to view all sorts of pop-up ads when they view the picture.

TinyPic doesn't have pop-up ads and it also generates forum code for you to use to host the photos

Eg. my avatar ;)

Your avatar is hosted at eve-files.com and not imageshack
My signature is eve-files... my avatar is imageshack.
Here is an imageshack image... with no pop-ups ;)

Just what we needed.

Do you have some sort of account with them? The first and last time I hosted images with them they came with pop-ups.

Either way, I'm sure you have evidence that they can be used without pop-ups but I have hosted images with them and got them. Perhaps there is some way to avoid them but that doesn't negate my experience with them

Since there are alternatives that are totally without any pop-ups at all I don't see the point in promoting an alternative that does have them...in whatever form.

I've used Flickr for the images I've posted up (see my other posts), it's pop-up free.

Probably it's best feature is that there's a tool you can download to your computer that makes uploading and resizing the images a snap, much easier than the web interface.

No I just go to the homepage, hit browse then upload, copy the "forum link" box and paste it into the box here. I've never had any pop-ups with them. I really have no idea what you are talking about! They've always been fast and reliable and perfect for a quick image in a forum post. No logging in, no need to delete the image afterwards or worry about storage space, just link and forget. Maybe you are confusing them with another host, or you have some kind of pop-up trojan on your PC?

Shrug. I've never had pop-ups, nor heard of anyone else having pop-ups until now. As you can see from this thread, you don't get popups when imageshack images are used in forums. To each his own I guess.

But you do in other situations. Your problem is that you are assuming that I am simply referring to this direct embedding which I am not.

If I go to Image Shack and upload an image I get phpbb code to embed the image as it appears above.

If you then click on that link you will get the the image as well as, in my case, a PartyPoker.com pop-up window.

I even get the pop-ups in Firefox which has a pop-up blocker.

So the company does indeed use pop-ups so can you please quit trying to say that they do not.
