It is really a very different game. 1e though is still the bones behind 2e so a lot of the mechanics are still the same. 1e is still a great game to play. Just be prepared to take a few FAPs of Fighters as they are painfully good investments. And watch out for the ability to split energy mine AD to launch many mines around.

The general evolution between 1e and 2e was pretty good in general, although fighters were mashed too much in SFoS and were pretty useless. They did add in a few more rules though - Fleet Carriers, Scouts, Space Stations, Boarding Actions as well as a few other revisions. Armageddon also revised some of the rules.

I'd certainly buy 2e instead of SFoS and Arm. But there is nothing to stop you enjoying 1e straight out of the box. It was, and still is, a very good game.

The games are broadly the same, it is just nuts and bolt that are different. If you learn how to play first edition, there is only a few new things you will need to learn for second.

You can certainly play a 1e straight out of the box. Even if you decide to update to 2e, you will have a box full of counters to help you get started.
