Perception question

I am curious how others would handle this. If I have a player that is traveling through the woods and there is a creature that is sorta hiding, since both Listen and Spot fall under Perception, how would you handle wanting the character to be able to do both?

Yeah - ignore the detailed separations and just leave it as one opposed Perception vs Stealth roll, with a penalty (possibly) if you think the strollers aren't really paying attention.

I concur, just roll against the highest skill.

Alternatively, if the roll also falls under the lower skill as well, give more information.

I'd only allow 'augments' between characters, so if two characters are searching, I might allow the character with the lower perception skill to contribute their critical range as an augment to the more skilled character.

Makes you wish that Runequest had rules for Augmentation, huh? ;)

Doesn't it?

Characters will often have the opportunity to help one another during various tests. Every assisting character adds his critical score (10% of his skill) to the primary character’s skill.

Isn't that augmentation by a different name?

Not really. Augmentation, as per HeroQuest, is using some of your own skills to provide bonuses to what you are trying to do. eg: I'm a good listener but I might see something too. And I've made a special study of the tactics of the hill people... and I happen to an expert at ambushes.

Sorta like me - I'm a cruddy programmer but I am wizard at setting up databases and models for GIS and even better if they involve geology or archaeology. ;)

Ah. HeroQuest. I have it, but I can't read it. I've tried... it just doesn't "click" for me. Thus my confusion on augmentation.

Heroquest requires a complete change of mind. It didnt click for us untill we sat down with it and made characters together.

You could use HQ style augments as well though. Just add a tenth (or even twentieth) of the skill.

Without HQ style skills, Im not sure if it'd be as keen though
