Painting the White Stars ?

Mongoose
Hello,

I'm currently waiting for a nice number of ISA ships to arrive to my home, and, as my EA-Crusade fleet is being taken charge of, i'm beginning to wonder how i'll paint those nice White Stars.

I must admit they don't look like the easiest ships to paint, with all the "vorlon effect" on their surface.

So i'm asking for advice, for examples (pictures please !), for anything that can help me. If i had to do them right now, i would base them with a light purple then brush them with a light blue. What do you think of it ? How would you do them ?

Thanks in advance,

There's plenty of examples on the Mongoose Gallery, including one of mine :)

I did mine by undercoating white, painting silver then puple stripes. My girlfriend did some by painting silver then mixing silver+purple and applying with a bit of sponge. Both look pretty good IMO. Then she did some with gold, red and green glitter... those are a bit... unconventional

hmm...

Didn't think about silver... Maybe a mix of Silver/Very light blue in order to have some "blue reflections".

I did Check the Mongoose Galleries, and altough some of the minis are well painted, i find them too dark for White Stars. That's why i'm asking for any opinions :-)

If you find them too dark, thats the only opinion that matters... do it your way, make them individual and different ;)
Good luck... you've got 10 to practice on!

I painted mine silver and then loosely patterend them with purple ink. then gave them a green 'glow' along the sort of mouth bit. Looks quite nice in effect. Not sure if Ive acutally got any pics of mine on the gallery to show what I mean but I like them.

EDIT: It seems I do in fact but theyre not very good photos (they look rather darker than they in fact are and you cant really see them that well (its a pic of a fleet rather than 1 WS)

that's interesting. I may try them that way, that should do it.

And the fact is i should find some pictures of the white stars in the series, your avatar shows one that is pretty different from what i remember.

<slaps himself behind the head><begin to mutter to himself> Document yourself, fool !

Season 3 episode 1 has some nice shots of the White Star, when it is first given to Sheridan. To do it authentically would seem quite hard, though!

I did silver with some light purple. I used the cover of Armaggedon as a good basis, as well as the model pictured in SFoS. I did each one a little different. Finally think they look "right" after only trying for ten years to figure it out. :) My poor ol original AoG WS is finally happy.

There was an old site I found ages ago that shows 'how to paint whitestars' and the final result was AMAZING but it looked like a HELL of alot of effort!

Edit: Found it http://www.starshipmodeler.com/b5/b5minis1b.htm

I don't think the White Star colour scheme looks good when it's not moving, so I tried to replicate the way it might look when it's moving on my ones. I used a variation of the Minbari paint scheme detailed in the E-M war sourcebook.

I gave it a basecoat of purple, followed by a wash of light blue. I then did some spots of dark blue, followed by a wash of a light purple, then some more blue spots, then another wash. I don't recall the exact colours I used right now, but i think they came out pretty well, here's a pic:

I actually have some resin kits of Whitestars, a bit bigger than the Mongoose ones, with decals to cover the ENTIRE SURFACE... You paint it silver, varnish, apply decals, then varnish again.

Have never quite summoned up the courage to attempt one...

Not your basic White Star but interesting. Nice figures, even the avenger. And God knows i HATE that fig, it's so bland...

Noted, it seems interesting and more like the way i originally saw them.

I'll probably try to take a picture of mine when they'll be finished, but thanks everyone, i've got several ideas for painting them, now.

since I just got a box, and have about zero time to paint anymore (job hunting, trying to get married, deployments, etc), I'm figuring on a base of pearl white, with gold trim, simple, but it should look adequate, if not authentic. I paint to suit what I like- my models, my work, my paints, my choice.

Amen, brother.. :D

Trouble with me is i want to have them look like in the show and i didn't know how to do them.

And i have plenty of time to paint them when i'm working the nights at my job, so i just keep them unpainted until then. 8)
