Painting starfields...

Just curious if anyone has any tips on painting starfields, particularly the stars themselves. I tried the brush flicking method and wasn't happy with it because the dots were too small. I then tried dripping, but that left occasional strings between the dots that I had to remove. I have another black sheet of felt and I want to make another starfield gaming mat and am looking for tips to make creating it easier. I have no problems with the nebula effect. Shaped masks and spraypaint work great for that.

For our tables we have used MDF board (2 times 2 boards 2 by 4 foot for ease of storage) these where painted black first then left to dry!

Then using spray paints (mainly white but also red green and yellow) dusting the boards in stellar style designs.

The boards are left to dry and are then given a coat of varnish which makes the boards look blacker (when black has dryed it kind of looks a grey shade of black) and brings out the spray paint stellar clouds making them stand out a whole lot more!!!

hmmm...maybe pegboard and some masking tape?you could create some randomly placed round stars that way. combie with a few of your own drilled holes of smaller diamater and it might work ok.
