I just downloaded a game for my iphone called Dark Nova as it was free, well in this game you have a starship and take passengers and cargo from system to system. With the goal to make enough money to buy a moon and retire. So the game kind of plays like a mini Merchant Prince. You have to run from pirates and watch out for the police if you are smuggling. You can even become a pirate I think not sure yet havent bought a warship. Supposed to be a bigger better version for ipad's, and a small fee.

Yep, a nice game. It is more or less a clone of Space Trader:

Well, ultimately that genre of games derives from Elite, which was HEAVILY influenced by... Traveller! :)

Pics or it didn't happen! (In other words, prove it - how do you know it was?)

To quote Wikipedia:
According to Braben and Bell, Elite was inspired by a range of
sources. Much of the game's content is derived from the Traveller RPG,
including the default commander name of Jameson.

Elite ships are armed with pulse lasers, beam lasers and missiles (they did add a few other things though). Planets are rated by tech level, government type and trade codes such as Rich, Agricultural, Industrial and Poor. The list of cargo types available for speculative trade is pretty much lifted from OT Book 2. Ships can be equipped with fuel scoops and skim for fuel to avoid paying for it (albeit from the star instead of a gas giant).

The space combat part of Elite isn't so much Traveller, but the whole trade system is a pretty good clone of it. And, as mentioned above, Braben and Bell admitted it.

I tried, but my Computer-Fu is insufficient, I did not manage to link di-
rectly to the Wikipedia page about the Elite video game.

The best I can offer is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_(video_game)

... I do not know how to include the "(video_game)" part into the URL.
