Operation Pedastal

Silvereye

Mongoose
The resupply of Malta during WWII, basically Malta spent time under siege and in need of serious re-supply. Convoys were regularly dispatched and some got through here and there.

The largest re-supply convoy was codenamed Operation Pedastal, and was essential in stopping Malta from surrendering.

I thought it might have the potential as a historic campaign for VaS

Interesting things you find when looking for stuff. I've now named one of my ACTA Nikes EAS Malta.

I agree as well. The story of the SS Ohio getting to Malta against all of the odds is a great history to study and should make a great campaign. Talk about running a gauntlet, sheesh! I've never ever wanted a model of an oil tanker, but would be proud to have a model of the SS Ohio, to be sure.

It would be a rather sterile campaign if using the current campaign system. It runs quite nicely using the operaional campaign system that I'm writing up now. Of course you also need rules for MTBs to do the thing justice :)

Let me guess, Italian MTBs, right?

Some British ones, too, I'd hope. Surely they had some in Malta...?

Italian: "I have a pair of MTBs and 3 Stukas"

English: "I'll see your glass-bottom boats and raise you with 4 freshly refueled and rearmed Spitfires"

Fair enough. No MTBs for us, but damn it, we won anyway.

By the skin of your pearly teeth, you did. Now understand, I was tossing in a 'lil joke about the MTBs before, as it's very likely that the Brits did have some of those, but they would only be of some use in the vicinity of Malta itself I would think. Operation Pedestal is going to become a classic VaS mini-campaign, I would think, as it would introduce just about every kind of air and sea unit possible in the game, from planes and MTBs up to Battleships and Carriers. The SS Ohio will sail again!

There are a couple of decent ways of approaching a campaign such as this. The first is to run the campaign using a map of the operational area, put the opposing forces in their starting positions and let the players move on the map as they see fit. This requires a bit of effort to manage but is quite rewarding (most of the NWS campaigns that I've run or played in have been of this type). Teh second is an "episodic" campaign based on the real actions of the campaign, with the players running through a number of set encounters, the starting forces of subsequent battles dependent on the outcome of the previous action. This is far simpler to manage if you only ahve acouple of players. I've ru a few of these before as well.
