Not Enough Spacecraft

I feel that the core book does not have near enough different spacecraft described in it. This is exacerbated by the lack of spacecraft creation rules (though the Engineer rules do allow for Maverick-style modifications).

Question: Is the iCom Advanced Fighter an "Inca"? What about all the other fighters described in the card game.

I suspect the answer to these questions lies in the next book, doesn't it? At $29.95.

Oh well, I was going to have to buy it for the Solar System information anyway... 8)

The core rules contain a LOT of information. An initial release can only really cover the essentials needs to create a character and play the game. That means generic gobbits of a lot of small details, with more to come.

I've been very impressed by the core rules so far and I'm happy to wait and see what the support line has to offer. Then I can pick and choose...

Oh, I quite agree with you. I just wish it had more. At least the next book will be along shortly.

(broadcasting today from the "gentler" side of Katrina- we have power for the moment...) 8)

Hey cmd, though I do not yet have the book, I am sure you can make up ships on your own, using the example provided. You could even make somethin totally unique, and call it a prototype in the game y'know. Or heck, bring in a few star destroyers even. ;)

If you are the narrator its no problem, if you are the player though you could discuss it with your narrator.

More ships no doubt forthcoming in other products.. as has been mentioned there is already a HEAP of info that needs to be in the core rules and limited space to place it...

hang in there it will all turn up eventually.

Only issue I had was on the art front... not that the art was bad but simply that there wasn't enough of relevance provided.. essentially unless you are familiar with the CCG beforehand you are clueless as to what things look like by and large... so the spacecraft that are depicted I have no idea which they are...

heck during playtest we had to do a bit of scouting just to find out what the races looked like lol and yes I know they are all depicted on the cover of the book (though it doesnt state who is what...) but when we playtested it we had no art to go by so were rummaging on the net and deciphers site quite a bit

I do think race pictures should be included with race descriptions as standard though..if only to be helpful and with vehicles, weapons etc.. even if one isnt included for every item those that are included should include a little bit of text under just to tell you what it is.

I always want more art though..irrespective of game as that is my weakness and my pet peeve at ANY time lol

Well, it's like this: If you have the card game you do know what everything looks like and who's who on that cover. If you don't have the card game, blast on over to the decipher site and download the background pdf. It's chock full of basic faction info (most of which is available in the core book, thank ghod) and you get a great full page pic of all the major players in scale to each other. Elsewhere there is a book's worth of Wars fiction that really puts you in the picture.

Definitely, mine the decipher site.

Concerning spacecraft design- I don't mind cobbling up a spaceship (that's what we Mav's do...), but there needs to be guidelines on how to balance such a construction. At least the Engineering class provides some ideas. 8)

That is what we ended up doing back during the playtest, however my issue over this is that not everyone necessarily knows of the PDF's existence.. OR more importantly HAS internet access to get it... so there are is a portion of the RPG market who may buy the game who are going to be fairly stumped as to who and what things are..which for those gamers is going to be a bit frustrating.

Well the basic stat blocks for the vessels provided provides plenty of information in themselves and at least enough to come up with some similar "featured" stat blocks yourself without need for specific rules..

Though as with all these RPG's no doubt more comprehensive construction and/or modification rules will be forthcoming somewhere down the line in one of the future supplements.. though I imagine that depends on the RPG's popularity as ever.

With the serenity rpg coming out in a month or so, and with starship troopoers also giving competition, its pretty debatable. But to be honest, wars has something both these lack, and thats the fantasy element. Just like star wars force, which is the primary thing setting SW apart and making it so poular, wars has elements like kizen powers.

As a side note, anyone here playtested serenity? I don't have a lot of hope for it; for one thing its based on a new system (which could be good or bad) and the serenity/firefly universe is just not that unique. Nothing you can't do in d20 modern y'know, which is free. Therefore I think it will sell only to a niche market/crowd.

OTOH serenity rpg does have a few things going for it; extremely deadly combat for one thing (which I hear wars does not really have unfortunately, bit I could be wrong), a million $$ movie coming up, etc etc.

Man, how I wish mongoose would buy the SW rpg licenese off of wotc.

d20 Dawning Star RPG by Blue Devil Games had me purchase the d20 FUTURE by Wizards of the Coast. That book has a lot of spaceship stats, including many large battleships. Both books are good.
