Noob Questions...

Mongoose
I've read a little bit about Evolution etc. and I am wondering...When is it going to come out and is it better to wait until all the new stuff hits the stands before getting into SST miniature game?

SST EVO will be out about april, and will feature an improved ruleset, a card-based system of unit stats (much like Warmachine or Confrontation) and new models - prepaints of quite good standard. So the basic question is whether you are a person keen on painting an army all by yourself, or do you prefer to just get the models out of the box and play straight away - if you choose the second option, wait, if not - go for it now, the rule changes won't be that dramatic to make whole units and tactics useless IMO.

Very good summary Don. :D

I think that they are also looking to re-sculpt some of the Skinnie minis as well, but if you don't mind the mix of new and old, there is no reason not to start collecting now.

Hmmm, but are there only going to be Pre-Paints? I heard some "rumors" about Mongoose publishing pre-paints and unpainted models of the same kind so you can chooseto do it yourself or not...If not no problem either way :P Drybrushing and a little Wash often makes Pre-Paints go over the top goodness :D

Initially, the only new minis will be pre-paints, though the old minis will still be availible. Matt said he'd look into the viability of making limired runs of the new minis unpainted, but nothing's come of that yet.

So to summarize, you get the "Basic" units/models (like basic troopers and some heavy's etc.) as Pre-Paints, where you can add upon with more "Specialty" models wich come unpainted? How about the card system? Are the old models going to be supported or is it more like "you can use the old stats but its not official"? And how much do you need the cards (as I can imagine the old models wont come with cards).

Every existing model will be redone as a pre-paint, unless it's being dropped from the game (which isn't to say that certian units are bieng dropped, all we've seen are the warrior bugs, LAMI and Grizzly Exosuits)

In Evolution, each box you get will contain a card for the unit inside and a rulesheet. In July or so, the full rulebook will be released, and it's apparently going to gave the stats for all the extant units.

So to summarise - you lose nothing by just getting the prepaints when they come out - you'll have all the rules and stats you need to play.

Mongoose are intending to keep the original minis in production to appease the people who don't like prepaints. If you decide to collect the old minis exclusively, you will begin to miss out when new units and races appear - as they'll never be done as old-style minis. but everything that is released to date will be useable once you have the full SST:Evo rulebook.

In addition, there has been talk of re-doing some of the current minis such as some of the skinnies. I believe that the stats will remain the same, but the minis will be improved upon.

Allright leaves one question:

What do the cards do for the game? People who have old models will not have the cards so dunno how much that will impact on the game play? And last but not least...Is it a good idea to wait or just get stuck in allready?

The cards allow you to play right out of the box....watch the Project Card space for updated SST cards.

And it depends..do you want to paint your own miniatures or be lazy?

I dont mind eitherway :P Im a fanatic Warmachine player so on one hand Painting is natural to me but on the other pre-paints safes me time for WM army's...Tough one...But starting now doesnt havent an impact on game stuff? I mean buying MI stuff now and mixing it in with new pre-paints wont conflict to much ? (scale etc.) Okies color shemes might be different but thats something I dont really mind thinking about different regiments/broods (for Bugs) or cabals whatever for skinnies...

If you don't have the new unit cards, then you'll have to wait for the mail rulebook to come out to have the stats for them. And the new minis are more or less in scale with the old ones.

So the cards are actually just quik refference? And not an integral part of the whole (like Warmachine with its damage recording Cards or Confrontation in wich cards tend to be a BIG piece of the game).

they're as essential as warmachine's - they give you a quick reference for the unit stats, but the stats are reprinted in the rulebook.

well in Warmachine you also have them to see the damage tracks and keep the damage scores etc. So I would say in Warmachine they are more essential then just a quik referrence point (altough very handy!).

Also seeing there isnt much of a reply to be gotten on the SST RPG Topic I think I will fit the next noob questiion in here...Whats the difference with the RPG Hardcover and the Pocket edition? And how "Pocket" is the pocket edition anywayz?

For the most part you don't need damage tracks for SST unless we're talking Marauders, Exosuits, CHAS, any of the aircraft, Tanker bugs, Overseer, Thorny Tanker, King Tanker, Plasma Bug, or Queen bug....

you can always use a piece of scrap paper to track damage though :D but I know what you mean - they're roughly as essential, but even the multihit units in SST only take damage like warcasters/locks, so there's no need for an intricate grid like warjacks/beasts have. for th emost part players use dice beside the model to track damage taken.

Allright so cards are just "handy" check. But are all the models currently out going to be updated and resculpted to come pre-painted? Cuz then I'll just hold of for a while and wait for that to come along...

No "all" the current models are not going to be resculpted , at least not according to info given over the few months.

Some are, and have been mentioned. There will be new Exo-suits pre-assembled and pre-painted all plastic, rather than metal.

Some Skinnies will have all new replacement sculpts. All new production Evo figures are to be pre-- painted and assembled.

For many other figures we will just have to wait and see. :D :D :D

well, since the entire line is supposed to be translated into prepainted plastic i guess a slight resculpt is in order in every case, but only skinnies will have to face more invasive surgery AFAIK
