New to game - Think I might buy Earth

Hey all,
I'm new to Call to Arms and thought I might buy Earth Alliance. However, it looks like from the products that there are different time periods. Does the game not allow you to play certain units and do people usually play those rules. The later vessels like the Nemisis and warlock look much cooler than the earlier ships. I guess that would be crusade era? What would be a good army to start off buying? And how many points do people play and about how many points are the large ships?

First of all welcome,

Well the start points wise there is none it plays out as PL Like Patrol, Scermish, Raid, Battle, War and Armageddon

People play mostly 5 pt Raid Level.

and in 2 months the 2nd edition comes out so my advise is hold out for the 2nd edition

Welcome fellow cub fan - are you in the Chicago area? If so, there's a pretty large group that plays over at Games Plus.

Yeah, 5pt Raid is a good place to start. As mentioned, 2e is right around the corner which may change things a bit.

I've been wanting to get into ACTA for a while now. I have a friend who has a bunch of Fleet sets, but they're still unpainted.

I will probably:
a) wait until 2nd Edition comes out
and
b) get into either Earth or Minbari. As much as I like the way Narn ships look like, my heart is with the Humans and Minbari.

There's nothing to stop you getting the miniatures now if you're interested, then you can play with others in your area who have the game and wait a couple of months before 2nd ed. is released to buy the game for yourself
