New player questions

Hi, I'm just getting into this game. I'm going to order the hardback book tomorrow, that comes with the counters right?

I live in the states, so I plan to use GHQ minis with vallejo paints.

Anything else I should know before I get into it?

What comprises a typical "fleet"?

Using GHQ can I spend like.. $100 to get a solid fleet for large engagements?

And lastly, how is the 1:2400 scale on a 6x4 board?

Thanks everyone, looking forward to getting into this!

edit: one more question- I don't particularly like basing minis... I'm hoping basing the ships isn't required?

Under the current version of the rules don't bother with carriers they are useless. likewise any aircraft.

battleships rule, get several. which fleet are you going to buy?

A capital ship model from GHQ is about $12, a cruiser about $9 and a pack of three or four destroyers or similar for about $8.

I'd say you'd get your whole fleet in at 1/2400 scale for $100, easy. GHQ are the nicest models I've seen so far at this scale, but obviously come with a price tag to reflect them. As the saying goes, though, you get what you pay for. If you're prepared to drop $100 for a fleet, it'll be a nice looking fleet. Be sure and post pictures, we want to see... :P

Oh yeah, $100 for a fleet is a main seller for this game for me :)

I am a huge Flames of War fan... and I spend a couple hundred a month on that game, so $100 for a complete army is music to my ears!

Yeah I've been lurking this forum for the last few days, and have read a lot about the weak aircraft... that sucks cause I really want to have a carrier fleet.

Anyways I think I am actually going to build 2 fleets simultaneously... German and US. I'm hoping I can get other people to play the japanese and the brits, but if not I'll have two fleets capable of fighting without it being "blue on blue"

I did a little research on what seem to be the two main manufacturers of 1/2400 scale ships, and definitely like the GHQ better... I really like the painting aspect so might as well get the best models.

Of course... now I have to learn how to paint WWII naval... I don't know a damn thing about it :)

Indie, I spent about $265 on GHQ for my German Fleet. I got alot of ships though. I have 4 Admiral Hipper, 2 Bismark, 3 Deutschland, 1 Graf Zeppelin, 5 K class, 2 Scharnhorst, 12 Zerstorer and 1 H39. I have 6 U-boats but I made my own with small peices of wire so just the periscopes are above the water. I don't have a digital camera or I'd show them. They came out very nice. If you're a painter, you definately want GHQ. Try German-navy.DE for nice color guides of paint schemes for most of their ships.

Well, spread out over time that isn't too hard on the wallet at all.

I don't fully grasp the priority level stuff yet (I understand it basically replaces points, and get the general concept) but I assume we can get started with just 2 or 3 cruisers or so per side?

I'll probably order 1 battleship and 3 cruisers (or 1 battlecruiser & 3 destroyers?) for each fleet to get started.

It's our long work week, and short vacation :(

I don't really mind taking my time to build up with GHQ minis. Plus, the book comes with ship markers right? So in theory I could use those until I've painted up my fleet.

The rulebook comes with all the counters that you'll need. :)

The counter pack, which is already sold out, just has more of the same counters in case you want to have massively huge battles.

What are the main 1/3000 manufacturer's/retailers in the UK, Wulf? I like the GHQ models myself, but savings are always welcome...

Cool, thanks a lot guys!

Are the counters that come with the rulebook on some kind of card stock? Or are they actually in the rulebook and need photo copying?

Sorry for all the questions, I just hate to place a big order and realize I can't get started yet :P

They are on card that you can press out and play. Downloading of the additional counters is recommended, especially the double-sided truning template.

Great :)

I think I'm all set!

Any suggestions for a first order of some German & US ships that would produce small, but fun battles?

I gotta say, any game system that has a useful and friendly forum immediately gets massive points in my books, I appreciate all the help!

It's best to wait and see what forces are represented in the book, but basically, you'd want a Battleship or Battlecruiser, a Cruiser or two, and a half-dozen Destroyers. If you get the book first, you could buy fleets to play your preferred scenario from there (but none of them, I think, are US vs Germany).

Yeah I was afraid there wouldn't be much US vs German...

Would the battles still be decently matched though?
If you get the book first, you can choose a balanced force from the Priority system. I don't have mine handy or I'd give an example.
