New mini help and other assorted questions.

Mongoose
Ok, so perhaps I am being a little misleading, I need to ask questions and wanted to get some attention. (not totally a false title..heh heh heh)

Ok, so here I am ordering my first units I will play EA mostly, and so my first REAL order seems to be leaning towards the crusade era box and some other fillers, mainly chronos and of course fighters, and perhaps a couple older stand outs like the Hyperion's, and the sagis. anyway I have some chronos (group) coming and the crusade box should be ordered soon. wondering what everyone thinks on the choices I have so far, budget is VERY limited.

now the "meat" of this post, I could not resist the NIKE models, so I ordered a couple and I am overjoyed that they can be used as proxy's for the warlock, good stuff there. but I was searching for the "proposed" stats for he Nike on this forum and could not find any, if anybody knows that link I would greatly appreciate it, I would like to see them before I go off on a tangent.

on a final note what is the best way to get enough Furies? the poseidon box (who DOESN'T want one anyway) or like a fleet reinforcement box? I found one for fairly cheap, and it has some other units that I would not mind having. just curious! thanks for all your help guys, and when I get to painting....WATCH OUT! I am so not good at that and have HUGE hands so minis and me...well you'll get the point. I will post tho once I get em in!!

I haven't heard Mongoose rules on this for official tournaments, but I'd say you wouldn't be able to use a Nnike as a Warlock in a Mongoose tourney.

However in ordinary games, no problem.

how come? if it uses the warlock stats, and everyone is told it is a proxy for a warlock, why should their be an issue? it's no different to using tokens surely?

and bigtop, look for a post started by Prelude it's up on this first page somewhere, unfortunately it's about 35 pages long, and the stats are in their somewhere!!

Historically Mongoose have only allowed proxies at their tourneys when the actual model does not exist yet (Mr Evil used SST Speeder bikes he'd made himself at one tourney)

For ACTA you can use Mongoose counters, Mongoose or AOG minis. That's what it says in the tourney packs.

fair enough, Personally, I would rather see a cool proxy model than a counter, but such is life.

Lol Hiffano, man LOL! Ok I got the answer thanks guys and some very colorful side discussion to boot, however I am still wondering what the EA players out here think for my albeit limited choices for first physical fleet?

If your looking for fleet comentary; you might want to start a new thread and indicate what your goals are.

If your goals are to collect some minis you think look good, the crusade box set is just fine.

If your goals are to build a campaign force, where the priority levels are goign to be high; the crusade box set is excellent.

If your goals are to build 5 point raid fleets you are smoking crack buying the crusade box set. It's really top heavy, as in 3 armaggedon points; and biased towards fleet support; not the good raid/battle choices or initative sinks.

===

For 5 point raid, hermes are the classic initiative sink with 2 rockets and a starfury. The rest really comes down to what era; with Omegas, hyperions and novas being the bread and butter of solid lists; and saggies, marathons, oracles and delphi depending on the age of the list.

The short version is figure out what your goals are, play some practice games, and then pick a list.

The longer version is early EA is probably the easiest EA list to play- lots of saggies backed up by novas, hyperions or an advenger.

3rd loses most of the good early low level ships for the Omega (battle) and thunerbolts. I suspect the average early age fleet will slaughter an average 3rd age fleet.

Crusade is a completely new list, biased towards battle-armaggeddon level with very limited sub battle choices... which are core choices for a solid 3rd age fleet.

Some nice ships in crusade, but much more fragile then the earlier lists, I suspect the earlier two fleets can beat the pants off a crusade list. My best victory was a 3rd age v. a crusade- I lost two ships and little other damage for wipping out a 3 point battle crusade force.

---

My reconmendation for a tournament EA list is grabbing the New Dawn of the 3rd age box set- a few choice purchases will round the list out nicely; and provide a core of ships usable in all ages.

4 Flights of Starfuries: Critical for all ages
4 Flights of Thunderbolts: good for 3rd and crusade
1 Warlock Advanced Destroyer: pants now; but might be good again in 2nd edition
2 Omega Destroyers: solid core ship; one usable in a 5 point raid; 2 good in campaign
3 Hyperion Heavy Cruisers: Vital in all ages; good varients in early; good heavy hitter in 3rd and ONLY skirmish choice in crusade [utterly vital in crusade; optional in others]
2 Olympus Corvettes: decent choice in early and 3rd
2 Hermes Transports: Critical patrol initiative sink all three ages. No EA player can go wrong with 2-4 of these in ANY list.
1 Avenger Carrier: good carrier in early and third.

4 Flights of Starfuries: see above
4 Flights of Thunderbolts: see above
3 Apollo Bombardment Cruisers: See apollo posts. Not a bad ship; but out classed by the marathon and Omega. Useful to have 2-3 in a 5 point war battle... but a waste of time in a 5 point raid.
2 Chronos Advanced Frigates: Some people love them; most take one look at the damage/crew values and laugh. Your enemies will slaughter them with beams. I guess if you are facing enemies with out beams, they could be good. But Centari and narn get 4 AD beam ships as skirmish... figure 8 beams per chornii per turn. Pants.
1 Delphi Advanced Scout: awesome scout- unlimited range and stealth 5+ means if you are smart, its unkillable. Excellent choice regardless of the points value.... scout means 1/3 of the time you will double the firepower of all ships targeting its "pinged" target. In a campaign, with higher crew qualities, 2/3s of the time increased firepower.
1 Marathon Advanced Cruiser: awesome, but fragile ship. Plays completely differently then rest of the EA fleet; requires alot of practice. A battle crusier to the Omega's battleship.
2 Nemesis Advanced Destroyers: undergunned armageddon ship. Not aweful if your enemy is willing to be stupid and take armageddon ships; but not a great choice... 4 battle are probably a better choice. ONLY useful in large campaign games. Self repair is a good resource saver.

Don't get me wrong- its a good box set, and I am eagerly awaiting it. But I also have 2x nova, 3x hyperion, 4x hermes, 2x omega, a warlock, advenger, 2x olympus, 2x oracles....

Crucial to have the hermes and hyperions... which crusade lacks.

thanks for all the detailed help guys!! I have played some games, even started with just the rule book and die BEFORE I even played solo games myself to get a feel for it...and well, I thought I had it all figured out as to where to start....hmmmmm since some of the units are already named paid for and shipping their way to me I am kinda locked in...but as for the rest, you bring up such good points I have kinda gone to the drawing board for the spending direction of the rest of my precious fleet allocation (funds)

those were some great points, and well anybody else feel free to join in, thanks again!!
