I am sure you guys have all heard the news of a new lonewolf rpg. Personally , i never got into the ogl d20 stuff but this could be promising. i wonder what everyone would like to see in a new rpg, that they feel the existing rpg just didnt achieve. You never know, they may just take note.... Here is my wish list:
More Races: I would like the chance to play all of the canon races, including Noodnics, Dwarfs,Ogrons, Kloons, Szalls, Drakkarim, and even Giaks(for an unusual campaign), without them tied to a single career.
Not so High Fantasy: Please dont make all the character careers or classes uber powerful. I think it would be great to play more normal careers, such as thieves , gamblers, rangers, soldiers etc, that feature so commonly in the books. There seems to be a tendancy with the current rpg to boost up canon classes beyond their level in the books to keep up with the kai. maybe keep kai lords as powerful, but their restrictions keep them balanced with more ordinary characters-"Sorry Bright Fox, but i am afraid
I must send you on yet another probably fatal quest. You cant go gambling
with your lesser noble fellows..."
Grittier combat: the lonewolf books are splattered with gruesome deaths and dismemberments, yet the d20 hit point/EP rules are too abstract and clinical for my liking. It would be good to have some sort of critical or injury tables- maybe something like those used in Devers excellent "Combat Heroes" game, which expands on the Lonewolf mechanics. Dont have the books with me, but I remember some pretty nasty wounds........
Better Illustrations. Get the Chalkmeister back. nuff said
On the mechanics of the new system, i do like the sound of that. There are many "roll a single d10" systems already (Agone,Unisystem, Edge of Midnight etc). the books generally use a Roll d10, add modifiers, and refer to whether you got, say a 4-5 or 10+ etc. It would be pretty easy to roll a d10 then add a stat (rated 1-5) and a skill (again rated 1-5) to get a target number (assuming an average stat+skill of 5, so 10 would be your average
skill test, 12 for a bit harder, 15 very hard, and 18 near impossible. Maybe a 0 allows a second d10 roll, while a 1 minuses a d10 from your total.
Mechanical Wish list:
More Weapon skills:CS broken down into more weapon skills. So maybe your CS is equal to your Dex Stat, plus your Weapon Skill, whether thats Bow, Sword, Axe etc Why? So you can create a more varied adventurer, such an acrobat trained in the throwing knife, or the Dwarf hammerer etc.
Less Rigid Character Developement: allow players to develope in a much more personal and individual path, rather than rigid classes, where after a few adventures, you get to choose from a limited set of choices. If you spend a session on a pirate ship, why shouldnt you get to increase your swimming or Sailing skill by a point.
Anyway, enough for now.
